Yes it is confusing. Historically it was just petlog and Petrac. Although Anibase were in existence they used petlog for reunification but stored their own data. Now they do the whole lot and do not use Petlog at all. So now with the addition of Pet Protect there are four. This is why its important that the client understand what kind of database they are with, eg, 24 hour, not for profit, lifetime guarantee etc. Certainly very confusing for the pet owner! Most databases should be able to porvide detailed information on their service levels etc,

Kind regards

Pet Protect need to do a bit of marketing as I had no idea there was a 4th database. We use Anibase & Petlog on-line so unless Pettrac tell us when we ring them, about the new database we would have been unaware of its existence and may have assumed the chip was unregistered and rehomed the dog / cat. Surely 4 databases is too many?

I am the Product Manager for Tracer Advance microchips at Bayer and thought that I may be able to offer some advice when choosing a microchip supplier. There are four things that are really important to take into consideration and these are:

1. The readability of the chip - some chips have other functions built in which can impair the reading distance and the quality of the chip is often related to the price but key to readability.

2. The database that a chip is linked to is also very important. There are four in the UK now and its vital that you know where your clients' data is stored and what service levels are provided, such as 24/7 lifetime reunification etc.

3. The scanners available vary considerably in terms of reading distance and features. More and more people now rely on a scanner that reads all chips including encrypted chips. There are now so many chips available it is advisable to also take into account the quality of scanner (especially reading distance) when trying to read a chip.

4. Finally, ask what back up is available, in terms of technical and marketing, to support you in practice.

Thanks to those of you supporting the Tracer brand - and dont forget to get all of the new microchip month tools available now from your local rep.

Hope that helps

Caroline

Re: Microchip insertion and inserters
I have no personal expwerience of these but a friend of mine tried the thermo chips and advised that they were pretty useless in the summer as there was a great variation if the animal was lying in the sun and the chip was fairly superficial ( same in the winter with radiatiors). I was therefore not tempted and still use a thermometer, which seems to work. Have not had a Tracer chip migrate yet !

On £10 chippers we phone done up and were told that no vet was involved but " I've been trained" on asking what happened if something went wrong the reply was " nothing ever goes wrong". We then asked what if a dog bleeds and were told in all seriousness that ,and I quote verbatim " Only white dogs bleed ". This is a first for science and news to all the other dogs!! What training could possibly have been give? Was this trainer actually qualified to teach anything? Did the chipper actually stay awake for the whole training session? Should this chipper be let near any living being with a sharp implement?

And they wonder why we get angry!!!!
You often find ads for training courses in local papers etc...

The initial batches were calibrated incorrectly and could be out by 3 degrees Farenheit. Even those that weren't seemed to be affected by environmental temperature and made healthy dogs look hypothermic on cold days. Stressed dogs gave hyperthermic readings faster than we got from rectal thermometers. We seemed to get more wandering microchips with those than the standard Animalcare ones, which seemed odd as they had the same coating. They may have improved since then but we've not bothered finding out.

I've also recently learnt that they don't work well with microchip catflaps as they must be read at a closer range than standard microchips.

As a rule we use the Animalcare ones although our nurse got 100 of the PetProtect ones at 99p each. Now we've got them we've discovered they don't have the anti-migration coating (so won't be getting them again although it's too early to know how much they'll wander) but what a bargain!

Re: Microchip insertion and inserters

please excuse various typographical errors!

Re: Microchip insertion and inserters

I have no personal expwerience of these but a friend of mine tried the thermo chips and advised that they were pretty useless in the summer as there was a great variation if the animal was lying in the sun and the chip was fairly superficial ( same in the winter with radiatiors).
