Just saw a "Golden Doodle" today that at 8 weeks old has a hip sway to rival Marilyn Monroe, so bad that the owners asked about it. If nothing changes by second vac they're looking at xrays... and maybe the retriever bilateral THR anyway...

I'd like to think the increased crossing will lead to a healthier population of dogs whatever their owners wish to pay for them. However I regularly see an interesting Basset X St Bearnard whcih has chronic skin proplems to rival any pure Bassett Ive ever seen and horrendous angular limb deformities which will no doubt cripple the poor thing before long

i have to say this trend for crossbreed dogs does amuse me somewhat. of course, there's a lot to be said for crossbred dogs, which in theory are going to be less prone to the problems their pedigree parents might have,

I can't understand why people pay so much for them though.

I recently saw a "purebred" yorkie x chuihuahua. purebred?? the owner didn't seem to understand why that was an oxymoron!

I would like to point out that there is a difference between a crossbreed dog and a mongrel though! a crossbreed dog has parents of known breeding, a mongrel does not! (i.e. a mongrel is a proper heinz 57)

I wonder how long it will be before the KC decide to have a crossbred register - dogs from KC reg parents though not the same breed. would be a good moneyspinner for them.

oh and incidentally - red labradors? yes, we have a breeder who tries to get those, they're actually an extremely dark coloured golden.

My grandfather was always immensely proud of his Lergnom terrier - he told us he was the only one like it.

If you have not already clicked it is mongrel backwards and as they are unique must be worth much more than £1200 - or should it be £50 from the local rescue??

the best cross I've seen in 18 or so years was a dachshund x Dobermann- and tyou could clearly see both breeds- ... and I still have no idea how THAT happened!!!!

I'm always amazed at the dogs for sale ads in our local paper, where the designer crosses are advertised for about twice the price of the pedigree labradors just below them. Many would say that people who are foolish enough to pay the prices are driving the creation of more such designer dogs.

I however am the very proud owner of a wallie (whippet x collie) and a stinger (staffie x springer), both free from the dog pound, saving me a fortune it seems!!!

It's interesting isn't it? Maybe it's a backlash for all those years that crossbreeds were considered inferior to purebred dogs; now they are selling for more? It makes sense in a weird sort of way to me as I can't think of a breed that I'd consider my 'ideal dog'. When we were looking for a pup I did look at mini retradoodles ( min poodle X retriever) but there aren't many around. But then I settled for a rescue lurcher , whose parentage is uncertain but probably includes a saluki- a breed which I'd not usually touch with a barge pole.

Some of the little poodle x shitzus are very cute though...

You are quite right !! All these mongrels with stupid names and ludicrous price tags are a symptom of a sad society! If they want to create a genuine hybrid which breeds true to type then do so and then and only then give the new breed a name. But please give it a decent one and not some daft hybrid one. Try crossing a Bull Terrier with Shih Tzu ......and you get Bull....! Here ends today's rant ( tongue sort of in cheek!)

I'm now regretting mating my labrador with a labrador, and not a poodle. I hear Labradoodles are making £1200 plus each!

(that's a week's locum work for every mongrel............I knew I should have stuck in at maths and followed my dad into accountancy!)

We almost had one of those last year, he breeds bulldogs and his mum breeds Shih Tzu's. A couple of doses of Alizin stopped a marketing nightmare!

Mate of mine who works in Essex told me that someone came in a few weeks ago bragging about paying £800 for a 'Colliedor' pup. I too have a Colliedor - she cost my wife £20 a few years back. A fantastic investment I would say considering how her stock has risen, regretting speying her now!

At least no-one has 'designer- crossed' a Bulldog and a Shih-tzu yet

I saw a 'very rare red labrador' a few weeks ago. The owner drove across the country and paid an enormous amount of money for it. Looked like a ridgeback-lab X to me...but I wouldn't dream of pointing that out to the client. I jusy mentioned she'd got herself an unusual dog.....

It sounds like the brainless idiots are not paying enough tax, and have too much money to spend on a walking fashion accessory.

One can get a cross breed from the local dogs home for £50.
