I graduated as a Vet in 2000 and practiced for a little while before moving to the UK in 2002, I started a family immediately and went into teaching after that. I want to write the MRCVS exams next year and go back to practice, however

Re: My options

Thank you ever so much, I appreciate your comments.

Re: My options

PDSA is a briliant place to get a load of experience. You can apply to volunteer on their website here. You need to be MRCVS registerd or have logged an intention to sit the MRCVS exams.

I have worked at the PDSA for over 7 years and have learnt loads. You see new stuff every day. Over the years we have had a number of volunteer vets in a similar situation to yourself and lots of them have gone on to get good jobs - often within the PDSA.

Good luck!

Re: My options

hi Hajara,

i was in a similar situation to you also qualified in 2000 , and was working in large animal practise getting totally disillusioned with veterinary , took a year off to do something non veterinary . not being from uk i found it hard to get a small animal job sending off loads of cv s not getting any replies for interviews. then in the summer of 2008 when the pound hit parity with the euro all the aussies and south african vets decided that locuming wasnt worth it finacially, well that was what a lady at a recruitment agency told me. suddenly loads of locums positions at practises that would consider me , got my foot in the door at a practise for 4 weeks ,then after that got a 5 month locum at one of the veterinary chains , then was able to get a full time position. i must admit having not done any small animal work since college it was a steep learning curve , was on the internet googling a lot of stuff , reading the in practise magazines , uk vet comanion, and buying veterinary books and going to a lot of evening cpd , i found locuming was a great experiance and i was lucky as i was flexible tto move around uk. i decided to throw myself in to it to get up to speed quickly , since you say you have a family weekend work locuming for a local practise would be an option , even at my practise they have they have a girl in her late 30 doing weekens from spain and it suits getting on well. once you into the routine its gets easy.also i rang blue cross , charity clinic in london to volunteer my time for free to get experiance , but they turned me down . if there is a local rspca or pdsa clinic offer to volunteer to get experiance and this would count as cpd credits i think.

best of luck
