Delighted to think I'm doing my bit, however small, for democracy!

And Michael / Gillian. I have now added a banner at the top of the forum, and a link from the main navigation, so I hope it that will help others who may come directly to the forum.

Still wish you'd make the home page of the site your favourite

Re: Campaigning for RCVS
I have to say, Arlo, congratulations on starting what has become a very spirited and enlightening RCVS election forum.
I'd like to echo Vikki on this. I've never voted in RCVS elections before in the 12yrs I've been practicing, partly apathy, partly not feeling it will make a difference and partly not really formed opinions on issues. Discussions within practice tend to focus on in practice issues and tend not to really touch on the wider profession-wide issues. I'm one where the RCVS mailings tend to get opened "Thank god I'm not in trouble" then put on the side to never be read (and I'm sure I'm not in the minority there). I'm actually looking forward to voting this year.

I've been floating around the Vet Surgeon forums for some months now and have to say the opportunity to read discussions from a variety of vets in practice who know how it is on the ground has really stimulated me to think about things more and to consider my opinions. Add in the general vet bashing that the media has taken up as a new sport so I'm feeling a stronger need to defend the profession and my interest in veterinary politics has grown so I'm less likely to sit back and leave decision making to others.

So congratulations Arlo, there is one more vet who will be voting this year and it's because of this website. Thank you

Re: Campaigning for RCVS

erm...my bookmark is to the forum page too - so have only this week discovered the RCVS pages..oops...

Re: Campaigning for RCVS

Hmmm - hadn't thought of that.
I was quite concerned that my mailing might be seen as tacky electioneering. The feedback I've received from you and from others has been very positive so far - but there's still plenty of time for brickbats...

As you are aware, all the candidates are available to answer any questions on the Royal section of vetsurgeon.org, and I'd encourage everyone to have a look at the questions and answers on that section before making up their minds who to vote for. I've explained my concerns in my letter, and the other candidates' areas of experience or expertise can be gleaned from the answers they give to the questions posed.

Kind regards,

Slightly off topic but am I the only one concerned that my home address is available to whoever wants to pay for it? Given most vets are ex-directory, and would rather avoid nuisance calls from owners, or possibly worse, this has always struck me as rather odd in the modern age of data protection and privacy.
I am ex-directory, not on the edited electoral roll so don't get mail that way, have opted for the mail preference service and always tick the no-contact boxes. I also give the RCVS my work address, which is easier when you are the boss as I am unlikely to change jobs in the near-future, but I have no privacy worries that way. I also have a very good receptionist who protects me from the worst of the junk calls. Why do the RCVS have to have your home address?

I'm not especially worried. We are in the phone book anyway. You can buy a copy of the electoral role (I do know you can opt out). Most (all?) library's hold copies of the register.

At least the VMD changed its mind on the idea of publishing the addresses or registered premises on-line.

Re: Campaigning for RCVS

Slightly off topic but am I the only one concerned that my home address is available to whoever wants to pay for it?
