Well from memory my salary was not top end, around £27k in 2001, I think the starting salary now for a VO is around £32-35k per annum,

I'm not sure what OV's/LVIs get for each test, but it can't really be compared as this is an additional service which private practitioners agree to provide for renumeration, if I remember rightly on a sliding scale.

But if you took £35k as basic, no car, no house or allowance, miles reimbursed at 40p per mile for first 10k (? I think, but correct me if I;m wrong), then 25p per mile, and simliar annual leave. There was an on-call system but I think in 5 years I was only ever called out twice.

working a 37hr week, 52 week year, it works out about £18.19 per hour Gross, or £13.64 roughly net.

So is this comparable to TB testing? I was under the impression it was per head and not per hour, but as I'm doing smallies now, it's been a while!

Yes,when I said LVI (old terms) I meant OVs

and when I said OV I meant VOs!!

I did not mean they get extra for TB testing, what I meant is that it would be interesting to know what their general pay/h is compared to that that is paid to OVs/h for TB testing.

I'm not sure but either you Matthew, or I, have the wrong end of the stick here.

I was of the understanding that OV's were LVI's?

Veterinary Officers (VO's) are full time Animal Health employees, and therefore their pay negotiations are handled by Prospect Union. TB testing by them is carried out as part of theor job and they no not get extra remuneration for this function.

In our area, the South West, all farms have to be TB tested annually now regardless of their previous parish testing period. AH totally relies on LVI's in order to implement this policy - unless of course they would train vast numbers of non-vets to do TB testing.

I don't know, but I would doubt whether LVI's get paid the same rate as AH's OV's for TB testing? We should do.
