Small to medium VSDs do not need closing in dogs. Big ones that cause cardiomegaly would benefit from closure. Yes, these occluders are expensive. But to put it perspective, it still cheaper than most specialist vet orthopaedics ops! And much more worthwhile.....in my opinion

erm....going to show my ignorance now...but I had her scanned at 4 months old and the defect was pretty small and not causing any bother at the time - altho it is apparently quite near a valve so there is a risk of deterioration......(sorry- can't remember the details!!)

The cardiologist said I should have her scanned again at 8 months old or so to see how she is doing.

So far, at just under 6 months old, she is acting like any other dog....although her thrill is pretty impressive. I actualy spayed her today (it was a quiet op day!) and she was fine with our normal anaesthetic routine. Freaked the nurses out though, feeling the rhs of her thoracic wall!!!

To be honest I have never even considered surgery - and didn't realise it was a reasonable option. Do they usually need closing at some point? Should I be getting her checked more, or do I wait for problems to develop first? Do I need to take out a second mortgage? (Afterall, vet bills are SOOO expensive! )

We have a border terrier chap that we got from rescue some time ago. All our other dogs are quite large but he or they have never noticed. He really is a sweetheart.

We have a collie/retriever cross. He's a lovely boiy and such a great mix. But he's a bit big.... We'd like something a bit smaller next time( are thinking of getting a new puppy next year) and wonder if a Border Terrier might fit in. We do have a lot of small furries around the place as well as a few cats so it's the 'terrier' bit that concerns me...

We are also looking at an -oodle cross of some sort.

Border terriers RULE!

They really are fantastic dogs, had mine (Otto, aka Spanky) for 9 years, and can't imagine life without him. Such a character, well balanced, easily trained, great fun, fab companion.

He appears in November showcase Liverpool ad in Vet Times- fame at last!

it's just such hard work having a dog who is smarter than me.... he doesn't mean to be naughty but he thinks his way is easier than mine (and is often right, but for the wrong reasons!)

whereas the Lab just wants me to tell him what to do!

I spend half my day fixing dogs with genetic malformations / diseases so there is no way I am going to get one at home. Collie's all the way!!!

It's odd but thinking of the vets I know with dogs, most have collies or terriers, a couple gun dogs, ie working breeds - very few seem to go for the small fluffy yappy things. Maybe it just depends on where you work as to what waifs and strays arrive looking for homes

I'll admit to being charmed into Labradors by my current lad, except the issues with their poorly legs.

My other one is a collie cross, and a lovely dog, but far too clever for me!

Like Niall , I'm a Cairn fan I've had 2, both SUCH characters. I'm currently Cairn-less, but have a brain-damaged Collie and a Lab with atrocious hips (guess how I acquired both !!!!)
