I think it's an interesting subject ... I went to talk to vets and nurses at Blue Cross to see how they define pragmatism.

Hi Beats - we thought about this too, but had concerns about the difficulty of filming, how much people would watch films of others performing a procedure that takes at least 15 minutes, and privacy concerns ...

BUT ... then we were (are) thinking, how about getting everyone (GP vets) to share very short 'show me' videos of tips, tricks and techniques.

A minute or two long. People wouldn't have to show their face if they are uncomfortable on camera. Just point the phone at your hands.

These don't have to be game-changing-nobody-else-will-have-thought-of this tips / tricks. Can be quite mundane but things that perhaps a new grad may not have seen done (or done well).

Potentially, a library of short demos produced by vets for vets would, I think, become a really lovely and very useful resource.

So I am going to give that a go.

Would anyone here like to start the ball rolling? Beats Michael Woodhouse Judith Joyce, I bet you've got some great pearls of wisdom or techniques which new grads (and even some more seasoned vets) would be hugely appreciative of.
Can I play devil's advocate here?

I agree it's vital that it's done with first opinion generally used equipment but if quality is the most important thing, I think a residency trained experienced surgeon with their feet on the ground is the way to go rather than various first opinion opinions. I'm not dissing first opinion surgery - far from it, but we all pick up bad habits along the way and a reminder of good first principles is a good basis for discussion.

More devil's advocacy. Do we have to be a bit careful how swapping good ideas is handled in these days of ethics review and accepted veterinary practice, defensive practice, whatever? (I am probably a bit on the nervous and dated side, as someone who first worked in a practice where large animal Immobilon diluted with water was used (not by me) for dog anaesthesia and the inside of a biro was used to fix femoral fractures,)

RE: What would be most useful from a vet film club?
anaesthesia for small pets always helpful and even anaesthetic circuits as it was a long time ago I did anaesthesia and I am sure things have chang
Agree that would be really useful. I think things have improved a lot but in the late 20th century I was a VN examiner (more of an adjudicator really as I had no say in the questions or how the exam was conducted) but I know that issues persisted well into the 21st century (as a training practice) and anything that can make it a less stressful and more trusted experience for nurses would be wonderful.

RE: What would be most useful from a vet film club?

I've always wondered on video sharing site where could upload video of real surgery you did and then have others comment on it ideally with everyone allowed to comment uploading their own cat spay video!
Yes indeed!!

Actually, I'm thinking there's possibly a tie in with my films about pragmatic medicine.
I think quality of the content is more important than length.
I agree!

One thing to bear in mind, though, is that making films is an artform (in the same sense as painting) and I am reminded of the saying that to be good at anything, you need to be shit at it first. The point I am making is that the quality of films I make will improve with time, so don't go too hard on my early stuff!!
There are quite a lot of videos on YouTube so there is scope for discussion.
That will be a large part of what I hope the club will do: Identify and share good stuff you've found on youtube and vote for those which should appear in a gallery of top notch films on VetSurgeon.

RE: What would be most useful from a vet film club?

There are quite a lot of videos on YouTube so there is scope for discussion.
anaesthesia for small pets always helpful and even anaesthetic circuits as it was a long time ago I did anaesthesia and I am sure things have changed

RE: What would be most useful from a vet film club?

I think some nice, UK, first opinion videos on bog-standard simple stuff would get you traffic. A GPs approach to a bitch spay, cat spay, dog & cat castrate. Surgical planning with mass removals, mammary lumps, entropion, lateral wall, AG removal, enucleations. I don't think I'd seen a bitch caeser as a student.... I qualified, and no one had ever taught me how to deal with a traumatic wound stitch up! Would raise interesting discussion, and these are not easy to find in a single location (or didn't used to be). It's vital that its 1st opinion vets with normal equipment, not using 2 scrubbed in assistants, a £20,000 electrosurgical laser, and a retractor we have never heard of.

Ask the nurses, but OSCE tasks would be great. SImilar some training videos on anaesthetics would have cross over potential.

Radiograph interpretation could be a useful topic and lends itself to shorter films.

Then you move onto the more weird and wonderful where experienced vets are looking to do something new or unfamiliar. In the last 12 months I've looked up perineal urethrostomy in cats. Things like thyroidectomies, AG removal, basic orthopaedics, more complex orthopaedics, perineal hernia, diaphragmatic hernia, prostatic cysts.

I think quality of the content is more important than length.

I don't want to watch a video about a product. I don't care what most people have to say, unless expressly interesting.

RE: What would be most useful from a vet film club?
Think something putting the older members in touch with the younger members is a great idea with tact and diplomacy
Massive generalisation but self employed oldies with a vocational outlook might not have much to chime with younger employee demographic looking for work life balance. I could imagine it becoming a bit negative. But finding some reliable? numbers on mental health issues etc in the different demographics (survivors of the old guard vs younger graduates employees vs the new entrepreneurs) could be interesting Or panel discussion of traditional vet work stressors vs new generation stressors for more understanding between groups?

RE: What would be most useful from a vet film club?
It’s a great initiative
We might be on our own in that thought by the looks of things!

Would be lovely to hear from anyone with suggestions as to what subjects you'd find interesting.

For example, is there anyone in the profession who you think is particularly interesting and you'd like to know what they are thinking? Are there any clinical demos you would like to see?

Thinking a bit more laterally, could we take some of the experience of the older members here and share it with younger members of the profession.

Films demoing specific clinical tasks you find skills are lacking in new grads? Films with advice for younger members, perhaps sharing real world experience for example on the subject of resilience.

RE: What would be most useful from a vet film club?

It’s a great initiative. IMDB for vets! With original content too and film club discussions
