Thankfully for us the council vets issued a statement through their solicitor that they hadnt put it to sleep EITHER and were providing care until an owner could be traced , this redirected all the ire to the councils practise as the baying public didnt believe a word of their completely true story either even when they posted pictures of the dog with staff a few days later the public opinion was that these were faked . Eventually the dog was rehomed with an attempt at some good publicity that absolutely no one was interested in .

LOL - spluttered into my coffee.

What struck me was the outpouring of grief / anger / rage expressed about a dog the posters (a great many of them) hadn't even clapped eyes on.

I mean, forget Gaza and Ukraine, lets all light a candle for Mr Bones the dog.

Also, the unfairness of how people are now empowered to write whatever crap they feel like about vets whilst you are not able to defend yourselves because of client confidentiality (though that is probably no bad thing, as a dignified silence is probably better in these kinds of situation than fuelling the spat).

RE: Have people seen the Medivet Canvey Island stuff?
Clive Ansell said:

I don't how legally binding this would or wouldn't be?

Not worth the paper it is written on.
If there is take home message, it maybe opens up a discussion about consent and informed consent, and whether someone who gives consent for euthanasia (or any other procedure) is actually able to do so legally, because an animal is co-owned or has more than one owner. What lengths should we all go too, to ensure that someone giving consent is legally able to?

I've had a few scenarios through my career, where there could have been doubt over ownership.

One, very similar to this; SBT rehomed by a small local rescue centre, dog finished up at surgery for a suspected splenic mass, turned out to be hepatic with multiple metastases so PTS without waking up was advised and carried out with the owners full signed consent. Rescue centre tried to claim dual ownership and treatened legal action. Told them to get lost, didn't hear anymore.

Another was a man who presented a young Border Collie for PTS for aggression. Dog was very placcid, and I sensed something was wrong, so declined. Turns out he was in the middle of a divorce and it was his (ex) wife's dog. Doing it out of spite.

Another was an elderly gentleman who presented his very sick neighbours cat, pretending it was his, registering as a client and signing all the paperwork, for PTS. Very angry owner the next day.

RE: Have people seen the Medivet Canvey Island stuff?
I don't how legally binding this would or wouldn't be?
Exactly.

Stupid thing is, Cat Henstridge put something on her instagram politely asking people not to pile on as they don't know all the details. To which, everyone piled on in the comments saying she was wrong. People are bloody stupid.

This is also the issue with 'rescues' just being a couple of crazy people thinking that they are helping animals and they know better than a qualified vet.
Ultimately, a private and confidential decision between owner and vet, nothing to do with anyone else.

It's difficult here to establish fact from social media rubbish, but it seems there was/is some confusion/debate/disagreement over ownership of the dog. The dog was placed with a new owner/adopter by a rescue centre, seemingly with some form of contract in place where the rescue centre retained rights of some sort. I don't how legally binding this would or wouldn't be?

From what I can see the dog was PTS at 8 minutes past midnight, so whether there was a reason we don't know about for it to be presented OOH, I just don't know.

Not sure if scanning and recording the microchip number would help much either, it doesn't prove ownership as far as I know.

I think Medivet should try and get that facebook BS removed.

RE: Have people seen the Medivet Canvey Island stuff?

Oh my giddy aunt.
