It all depends on what you mean by a "dental" – but I can make an informed guess as to what it means in many practices, and it is beyond me how anyone can jack the price up that high.

locally the charity sector has had to make drastic changes in last month so we are absolutely swamped with demand for very affordable care and out of hours provision , we cant take it on there is no capacity but that doesn't stop the phone continually ringing day and night and people turning up at the desk pleading Infront of other clients . we are 15min from some of the poorest wards in uk and a city of 750k people . we will have to make significant changes to protect staff and cope which will further reduce options locally .

I see this daily, in some of the poorest areas of the West Midlands.

Do you think we are anywhere near the point of implosion; where the veterinary profession is no longer able to cope and unable meet the needs of a large number of owners and their pets, even for basic veterinary care, form the poorest parts of society? and at what point point does this become a welfare concern?

yes they have too , certainly with teeth and the car unless its dla ,court will be legal aid and health care will be the pot of gold at the end of the nhs waiting list . the £3.50 supermarket spot on is in their affordability range . a veterinary dental at 700 pounds or a pyometra at 1250-4k isnt.

It's ingrained within our culture and mass media.

Watching reruns on TV recently of Rising damp, Steptoe and A Touch of Frost all references to Vet fees were along the lines of "good grief! is that correct?" , "how much?" , "talk about being skinned alive"

When folk start bellyaching about fees, I quickly point out that £1 in every £6 is VAT and nothing to do with us. A £600 bill is really £500 + VAT. Go and whinge at your MP.

Yes, they do.

Family members who are lawyers, and a very good friend who is an Audi trained technician, recently set up his own show, come across folk all the time who have got into a pickle because of the lack of good professional advice and common sense.

Other friends seem to be going down the route of DIY health care; buying blood test kits for TT4, Chol, Vit D, colon cancer, prostate cancer etc. Some of them seem expensive, and I wonder how accurate or useful they really are, when the same tests are available via the NHS along with a professional interpretation. I suppose it is made worse by clever marketing and a lack of accessibility to the NHS.

It always amazes me that people just buy this crap off the internet then complain about vet bills when it doesn't work. Just like people who buy Frontline or the Bob Martins of old that made their cat seizure.

I wonder if they take the same approach to their own health, or fix their own cars, teeth, and represent themselves in court.

They're right, veterinary care is expensive. To provide and therefore to pet owners. No point in pretending it isn't.
