I’ve been out of practice for a few years. Relative is getting 2 rabbits and was asking about insurance. I know a ballpark figure for what I would say cat/dog treatment costs can go up to but not really

RE: How much would you insure a rabbit for against referral costs?

[quote userid="2131" url="~/f/non-clinical-questions/30826/how-much-would-you-insure-a-rabbit-for-against-referral-costs/243015#243015"]

Clive Ansell said:

It is more in the region of £20 to £25 now, for each injection.

Must be something about the practices Clive works in. I see injection fees but never this high and I work in all types of practices

No practice manager has ever mentioned this to me.

Locums though may charge more ruthlessly as they don't have the emotional attachment to a client.

If I were approached given my figures, I wouldn't return. That's easy for me as a locum looking to retire, not so easy for a younger vet with local ties to the area and otherwise enjoying the job.

There is very little point in having insurance if the maximum limit is not enough in the hour of need.

I suppose it depends on expectations, cost of insurance, and how far you would go with treatments etc. Personally I wouldn't spend those sums of money on a rabbit, but I perfectly understand that many would

RE: How much would you insure a rabbit for against referral costs?

Definitely vaccinate - these are fatal diseases with highly effective vaccines.
If they genuinely want to do everything they can for their rabbits, I'd suggest they get a similar cover level as they would for a dog or cat, but also that they spend a lot of time researching their set up and diet and getting those right to prevent problems as far as possible!

RE: How much would you insure a rabbit for against referral costs?

[quote userid="2131" url="~/f/non-clinical-questions/30826/how-much-would-you-insure-a-rabbit-for-against-referral-costs/242902#242902"]The need ?
WOW!

I think back to my childhood, gazing out over the Watership Down that was our garden (or might as well have been, given the bunny population), and find it very difficult to rationalise the idea of blowing £2-3K on a rabbit!
In my honest opinion, unless insurance is petty cheap, I would put monies to one side as I rarely see bills running into the types of figures for cats and dogs.

The most I see is maybe £150/day for ilius and this is often driven higher by the need to charge an injection fee on each injection, which can often be £10 -£15 each and if you are injecting 4 different (small) amounts of drug, can add up.

I'd always vaccinate. HVD is a killer and although the risk is low, the bunnies will get a check up as well on an annual basis

Congratulate your relatives on getting two. Did you know that in Switzerland it's illegal to keep a solitary rabbit? Great for wellbeing
