Prior to this they graduated from Liverpool with a Biovet degree. This proved not to allow him to do what he wanted and hence why he decided to do his nurse training

RE: What are vet schools' admission policies?

The thing I have found strange is they have sent an email explaining their decision and that the decision to offer a place is made on the answering of a series of questions. They have said that the vet school does not have any involvement in the offering of places. They check that they reach the minimum work experience but anything over and above that is not taken into consideration. I really thought they were moving away from this approach.

RE: What are vet schools' admission policies?
I do have to worry about the candidate when their google powers are so weak......
On a serious note, I think one of the entry criteria should be being able to survive more than 10 minutes without access to any electronic device, and own and know how to use a good old fashioned text book and a dictionary.

RE: What are vet schools' admission policies?

Overseas through English offered in many East European countries but would need to check re fees/eligibility/accreditation post-Brexit (very acceptable for Irish students currently), courses vary and some very livestock oriented

RE: What are vet schools' admission policies?

Not everyone gets the advice that its best to keep resitting your Levels as eventually you'll get in as the cost of doing a post grad can be prohibitive at overseas rates for a second first degree. I think half my year were resits.
I am probably taking this a little personally as have always thought I could so easily have been him. Took 3 years of applying to finally get a place and I had no plan B. The condensed year wasn’t too bad as it is building on knowledge you already have from your degree. There are various universities in the UK that do the 4 year course: RVC, Bristol, Edinburgh: difference is some will charge “home” fees and others international fees for someone who has a previous degree so I would look carefully at that as the financial implication is significant with international fees. But for the sake of one extra year, some will also charge standard fees for post grads on a 5 year course so worth looking into that

RE: Vet schools admission policy
The only english vet school offering a 4 year vet degree course for those already having done a degree is Bristol.
they had about 580 applications last year for maximum of 60 "paying" (international or second degree) 4 year degree course spaces.

I do suspect the 4 year condensed programme might be quite tough (first 2 years rolled into one?), so they may look at previous academic achievement to see if candidate would be likely to succeed? The one thing worse than not getting on a course could be getting on a (very expensive) course, running up a considerable amount of debt, and not completing the course (and that could happen to someone who would make a great vet, as completing a vet degree possibly has very different skill-set to being a competent general small animal vet in practice).

Apparently there are something like 260 Irish training to be vets in Poland (I'm not sure on the authenticity of this), so as Clive says options abroad would be a consideration if suitable for the individual and may be a lot cheaper than UK route (albeit I'm not 100% sure of potential implications of no longer being in EU and mutual recognition of vet degrees etc...)

RE: Vet schools admission policy

Can he attend university open days or get to speak directly with admisions tutors?

Does he have too do a 4 year fast track course, an extra year is neither here nor there in the grand scheme?

Has he looked at studying in other countries? I have worked with a British vet who missed his A level grades by a hair's width, and finished up training in Bratislava, Slovakia. Now a really good Vet doing very well.
