Hmm,

Well, the competition closes tonight, and whilst membership of the site has grown by nearly 400 since it started, we are nowhere near the 5000 member target, so nobody is winning the prizes yet.

Trying to think what to do now.

Perhaps close the competition and award smaller prizes to the members that have invited the largest number of colleagues to the site so far.

Alternatively, keep the competition open and open ended. i.e. the £3000 will be awarded when existing VetSurgeon members have invited 5000 new members.

Or lastly, I could get run the same competition on VetNurse.co.uk and see whether veterinary nurses will get us to the target for the chance to win £3000.

Thoughts anyone?

Also lots going on at home at the moment, busy at work and as I am only there two am a week, I often just forget while I am there,

I have just written several slips with both the site address on and my email address on and I will make every effort to try and tell everyone this friday!

It says half way down that you must give your email address, and I also got the system to add your email to the pro-forma invitation at the foot.

Hi Gillian,

The problem with allowing people just to enter a name is that there will be people with the same names, plus it gives us an extra problem with spelling.

Also, the added advantage of entering the email address is that it also starts to build your VetSurgeon contact list automatically.

The answer surely is to give people your email address at the time you ask them to join.

i.e. "Join VetSurgeon.org and enter my email address aaa@bbbccc.co.uk when prompted on the registration form".

I asked loads of people to join - only for most of them to write back saying they needed my email address! I think that may be a barrier to people - just because they are a colleague doesn't necessarily mean they know my email address - in fact, these days many simply contact me on facebook! Couldn't they have simply entered my name? There can't be too many duplicate names in our profession can there?

An update.

A relatively small number of members seem to be inviting quite a few new vets to VetSurgeon.

Thank you again to everyone who is inviting people. Apart from anything else, I'm really working my backside off to make this site a success, and every time someone invites a another vet, it feels like a show of support for what I'm doing (I appreciate I may be deluding myself, and you could equally just be doing it to enter the draw!).

Anyway, although membership is growing nicely, we aren't going to reach the target of 5000 members by the end of this month unless the majority of members invite at least one colleague. Unless we do, the prize fund will not be released.

So I've decided to bump up the draw prize, which is now £1000. Anyone who invites just one other UK-based vet will be entered into the draw. More details here.

That now brings the total fund to £3000. An additional £1000 for the vet that invites the greatest number of colleagues before the end of September, and runner up prizes totalling another £1000.

That's my final offer. Any more, and Mrs Guthrie is going to have to go and work in the fields.

I've added one of those drop down messages which, if the technology is working right, should appear once a day to remind everyone to invite a colleague. I know these kind of pop up messages are annoying, but in this case, needs must.

If it appears every time you load a page, clear the cookies from your browser (tools > delete browsing history, or tools > internet options > general tab > browsing history delete), and that should fix it. If it doesn't, complain to me!

Thanks Evelyn, that's good to know (and PS, thanks also for the journal which arrived today).

And THANK YOU so much Laurence, and everyone else who has been busy inviting new members. I can't tell you how grateful I am.

As to other ideas Laurence, I'm not sure whether I have any. I think getting all the vets at the practice to sign up, and emailing other vets you know is the most anyone could reasonably do. So thank you again.

My boss has already signed up, as has the locum who'se covering whilst he's away. I've spammed everyone else whose email address I've got. Any other ideas?
