Thanks We have no family hx of military here so the concept of uniforms and beards being linked by rules very alien. Had a Google and see yes navy allows you to wear a beard as long as you are not in the navy anymore. Can't have a beard when in the services as it interferes with gas masks unless you are religious. Completely mad. Some politicians over here have famously had a beard all their career and spent most of that time having to deny they were in the army !

He wore a military uniform- the only arm that allows a beard is the navy and he wasn’t in the navy

I think Tony Robinson did a documentary which demonstrated that at some point a queen gave birth when the king had been a way on crusade so couldn't be the father . Following the constitution and genetics he determined the real King drives a forklift in Australia or something .

I suspect the Royal Family is beyond dysfunctional. Every aspect of life is under the spotlight both within the 'home' and every minute outside.

You can be extremely unhappy in comfort but if you have never known anything different perhaps it takes an outsider to identify the issues. My opinions may well be coloured by 'The Crown' but there is plenty of behaviour that could be described as bullying or abusive. The reality may be that his mother may have been the only half normal role model.

Sadly I have very little interest in his life so will probably invest in a good book and not his!

Edit and PS: locusts taste fine, Arlo. Nice and crunchy deep fried.

I had ignored this as I don't care much and thought who in the profession cares scandals were part of the job . If they are not cutting g off wives heads or marrying their first cousin hanging out with disgraced djs They were running up huge bills in the brothels of Europe or fighting wars or poisoning siblings or keeping enough mistresses that their illegitimate offspring filled the old house of Lords. Now it seems these things are no longer fashionable should we be MCVS is the R we have yo put after out nane acceptable does it suggest we condone this behavior? I also saw that apparently he had to ask permission to wear his own beard to his own wedding ? I thought beards were another thing they did Henry 8th Kaiser Bill etc

But Arlo, this is the thing. There is a way out, just leave. The issue though is that he has no skills to make the money he makes now by talking about his family.

I don't hate on the guy, there are worse people out there. He is not a criminal. I just don't think he deserves sympathy.

Michael Woodhouse Thing is, I think being born into the royal family IS so hard. Positively bloody awful, in fact. Never having any freedom to do what you want, when you want. Entire life spent in a goldfish bowl. Endless media scrutiny and lies. Endlessly having to be nice to people you don't know from a bar of soap.

Doni Dinu Catilina says I talk like someone who has never been poor. Sure, I've never had to make myself locust soup, and I've always had a roof over my head, so he's right. But when I try to imagine the choice between being hungry (but free), or living the life of a well-fed, but largely imprisoned royal, I think I'd take freedom.

Someone made an interesting point on the radio the other day ... which is that for all the gip Harry is getting for telling his story, it is almost as though he isn't following in the footsteps of BOTH his parents (who also took to the airwaves to share their stories).

Another point made was that we haven't yet seen any of the context for the stories doing the rounds at the moment. One commentator remarked that the book is mostly self-critical, which could put some of this stuff in a very different light.

Anyway, on balance, I agree with podenka. Why shouldn't he tell his story? Reserve judgement on whether he's been ill advised in the detail of what he's shared.

Meghan could integrate if she wanted? She wanted and could not - that is clear. Like Diana, she did and it let her enter eating disorder, depression and finally into a divorce - nice things to aim at…

I bet you also think poor mental health is something you CAN get under control if you want whatever the circumstances? Well it is not and this is what Harry acknowledged.

BTW he did not choose to be born into Royal Family and it seems he disliked the demands, enough to get out when they started to affect his family. He also renounced the money that came with the role and now makes his own, whatever way. Still kudos for him.

I feel sorry for him as he seems too stupid to realise the consequences of listening to Tinseltown manipulative advisors. They must have seen him as a short term bankable item. He has committed social suicide to a worldwide audience, insulted his family publicly, damaged the monarchy and offended a nation with his behaviour. Oh - and put a massive target on his back as well as increasing the risk for his bodyguards and armed forces off duty. Quite an achievement.

Unfortunately those who claim to be victims are often the nastiest bullies. I don’t intend to read the book but the publicised bits made my toes curl.

All this from a couple that craved privacy!!

I feel very sorry for him but everything he is doing drives that wedge between himself and his family even deeper. I am one of those who really doesn’t care what he has been up to but I would be more sympathetic if he was more diplomatic and tactful. I don’t doubt the Royal family will just wait till the media storm blows over.

I think it is really sad that a damaged, not very bright, naive sheltered man has been lured into a celebrity deal to sell his soul and his family to Netflix. He is going down some woke rabbit hole of aggrieved victim hood lead by therapists and woo woo and he can’t turn round. He has put a target on his back side like a waterbuck with his comments about his war experiences and seriously probably permanently damaged any future relationship with his close family. I don’t want to read his book, I’d be bored to tears , the headlines are cringe making enough. I’m with his Auntie Anne , I bet she won’t be reading it either.

I do and I will.

He was dealt a shitty hand many times and dares to openly talk about it. He started with his brother a charity about taking mental health out in the open and then his wife was dragged through the same as his mother who was the first reason for starting all talk (sic!).

I think monarchy has lost all the great opportunities to integrate Harry and Meghan for their benefit to make the Firm look more inclusive, modern and interactive. Now it bites them back.

Why shouldn’t he mention episodes or facts in his life that made him who he is now? He seems to me as a person who reflects on his previous behaviours (the way he talks about not supporting Meghan while she was under press attacs while pregnant), learns about himself and changes his behaviour. I command him for that approach.

I don’t think for one second that money was his motivation, though it may have become so when he realised he’d have to pay his own way and he saw the size of the security bill.

But this all started with the breakdown of the relationship between him and his brother and father.
