Last Friday I was lucky enough to fly to Saunders Island for my final visit to one of my favourite places in the Falklands. The flight out was amazing - clear and sunny on East Falkland but low cloud over the West so the pilot and i had to look for a break in the cloud cover to safely come down from 2,500ft to reach the airstrip at Roy Cove. It was a very skillful bit of flying. En route out we had touched down on the beach at Pebble Island because the grass strip was too wet. The beach was also wet but once the tide had gone out the sand was good and firm. My main reason for visiting Saunders Island was to say a final goodbye to a work colleague and vert good friend who died of cancer last year and is buried in the small graveyard in her home settlement. While on the Island I paid a visit to the original British settlement int he Falkland Islands at Port Egmont and thought you might like to see what it actually consists of. The British established a post here in 1759 at about the same time as the French were doing likewise at Port Louis on East Falkland. The British deserted Port Egmont in 1765 and the French also left Port Louis and that is when the Spanish came in - renaming Port Louis as Puerto Soledad. Of course, Argentina didn't exist as an independent nation until the early part of the 19th century. The British reclaimed the Islands in 1833 having first laid claim to them in 1759. You can read all about it on the plaque which was erected at Port Egmont in 1995.

RE: just to make you smile...

Tghak ou Francisco,it was lovely working with you. Today I received this email from him:

You really should read the newspaper. Today there are pictures of:
1) the post office in Ireland where some chaps went to collect a friend's pension, and when they were told that friend had to be there in person they went and fetched him but were still refused his pension because he was dead; and
2) views of a smiling puffer fish in Kent before and after a vet had sawn her teeth in half (sic) because they had grown too long.
