She lives near Bournemouth.
She now has one with a possible neck abscess that needs attention. After about 12 phone calls she managed to get an appointment in Bognor Regis, 70 miles away

RE: Reptile vet needed - help!

Absolutely!

Many of the “exotics” problems are simple or just management. We rescued tortoises and a variety of small mammals so had a reasonable husbandry knowledge. If you make appropriate notes and offer referral if necessary then that should be fine in my opinion.

If referral declined and permission to “have a go” I think that is fine as long as with advice from specialist that treatment is appropriate. My surgical experience mostly came from having a go. I have never been concerned about getting struck off for an error or missed diagnosis or a complication after surgery- even specialists have nightmare cases!

Probably far more damage from refusal to see !

RE: Reptile vet needed - help!
It is, sadly, a reflection on the type of society that we have become.
Couldn't agree more.

But I think we shouldn't just take it lying down.

RE: Reptile vet needed - help!
Unfortunately yes. Less vets are likely to give it a go and many are concerned about the DC if things go wrong. We saw a parrot with a ring stuck on the beak who travelled an hour and a half because nobody closer would see them.
Absolutely right.

Many colleagues are now paranoid of and fearful of litigation, and being on the wrong side of a RCVS DC hearing.

We are now told we shouldn't stray outside our comfort zone of ability and competence, and the days of having a go and giving it your best shot are no longer accepted. I have been accused (remember JGW) on this very forum in the past of being a have a go hero, gung-ho and reckless.

I did a locum early this year in a practice thats sees a lot of exotics. They had cases of people travelling in excess of 100 miles because no one else would see them. Many of these were not truely exotic, weird and wonderful. or unusual pets, many were Budgies, Rodents, guinea pigs etc.
