We are away to introduce a locum contract for future locums. Something brief. Confirming dates/fees/payment terms/hours etc. Would anyone like to share their one....?

The corporates seem to have specific contracts drawn up by HR departments, which I will only agree to and sign if I'm happy with them (I've had 2 occasions now where a corporate has cancelled me at short notice, breaching their very own contract, and they've had to pay me).

I much prefer a gentlemen's agreement, mutual trust and respect, and a handshake betweeen professionals, than a specific contract.

Things I would want clarity on are;

1. Rates of course, usually daily, but could be pro rata, weekly or hourly.

2. Whether PAYE, sole trader, or Ltd Co. whether or not VAT registered. Frequency of payment.

3. VDS or similar indemnity cover. covered by practice, or needs their own.

4. Agreed working hours, breaks, any OOH duties etc. Payments for working beyond agreed hours. Policy on cancellation from either the practice or the locum.

5. Nature of the work; consults, ops, mixture of both?

6. Any major do's or don't within the practice.

7. use of own vehicle if required, limitations, insurance, policy on home visits etc.

8. Goes without saying that one adheres to the RCVS CofC, VMD rules and H&S regs etc.
