Theonly person who I really knewworkingwith animals wasthe vet for our family dog, "JET" so I wanted to hisjob when I grw up I decided and nevr let go of that idea.. Luckily succeeding in my ream. Idd get a weekend job with im when aged from 13to 16and worked full-time, or at least 8.30am to 7pm Monday oFriday for the esar before starting University in 1976. I used things that Ileartn thre every single day of my career! Sadly He, Mr E.R.Moore in Leeds, took his own life way back in about 1995 or sio aged 70 when his wife had just died due to breast cancer I believe the cause. He was quite fearsome as booss but very, very knowledgeable and an excellent surgeon fro what I could see! So I cannot really hank him now for his positiveeffect on my career. Most notably as I've just been reinded by the fact that when I achieved Grades of j"ust" B, B , AND C one grade short of the 3 x Bs neededfior immediate acceptance at Liverpool, he wrote to thenm and I soon received an Unconditional entry-offer for the folowing yer instead rather than re-sitting the horribkle Physics A-level exam chasing a higher grade! nUnless ewrote to Liverpool saying Please just get this lad off my hands?? I caanot cope with him anymore!!I certainly learnt how to handle dogs and cats, how to apply a muzzle, liftthem properly andalso one key skill howto give a cat a tablert! I really showed cat owers thecorrect method every single day!! Then one evening ion about 1997 the Practice had an open evening so my Personal Show-piece was to demonstrate this technique to a large crow iof visitorsforthe eveig. I had our Practice Cat one we recued, called Laurence as my "dummy-patient"He was okay friendliness-wie but never a lap cat etc. and coulsd resist ifhe felt that way. So there Iw as Laurence on theConsulting table me holding him, stroken him, chatting to all of ou guests for theevening, maybe50 or more. I held Laurence, explained hat Iwas doing to the audience not so much to aurence, tipped his head back opened hismouth and in went the B12 tablet! I releaed hishead as isusual, he closed his mouthas expected then immediately coughed and spat the tableton the floorat the feet of in andfront of all the visitors!! At least it gave me another chance todemonstrate the simple [ to me!] technique, this time with 100% success!I do describe this in detail in my ook Cows In Trees!

Thanks for reading!

RE: ASKING FOR HELP please...
he best for your surgery tomorrow Julian.
To this day, I till feel shocked y the severity of my original injuries. to have my consiultan tGerry O'Reilly tell me that I inspire him and can help other patients with my history isvery uplifting. I picked up my own own personal motto for mypost-accident battles from\tv at some time: il |Desperandum! ~Never Desair! i I do try to remind myself of that any time I am feeling low. Gerry een told me that I shouldwrite a book about my cycling history and how it lead to and from my crash as it were. I know where that tale starts ;learning to cycle as a kid on mylittle red bicycle around our garden and I know how it fiishes, ht being where I am now; racing at a National level albeit as a Para-cyclist\! It is the bit in themiddle that's proving challenging so far! Watch this Space?

There is a very important rule in racing nowdays... NoHelmet = No Race!!For good and obviousreasons!!Back when I started we just had the foam-rubber typre hairnet helmets that wereno real protection at all. Atleast now, as I've shown these thickpolystyrene ones do offer real impact-protection! ver theyears Ihad been moreworried about broken arms andlegs in a crash stpping meboth Vetting and riding for the duration! Thatis another very touching post on thi site for me to reflect on. I not sure Ideserve the praise! I have thanked him recently, ot for the first tme or building such a friendly practice that the staff there from thosedays are till veryclose and good friends, i.e. meaning supportive of me ! I actually joked with David that, Oh I must haveat least donesomething right that searly stage of my career to tstill have dear friends, both colleagues such as the nurses, receptionist David and his wife as wll, after all these years/ At risk of basting he lkesto compliment me on the work that I did for him there around East Lancashire. Plus and Likewise I am still good friends with a lot of the farmers in that aea, those still with us after all these years!

Perhaps I did ot completely waste my five years as a student in Liverpool aferb rall??My very first boss in Preston was a good example of how not to treat new graduates!! A bully, ever-critical, telling me that my mehods taught at Liverpool ere always wrong but never offered to step in anme out with a tricky operation eg my first intussuscption or similar..I cannot speak ill of the dead but was very glad to move away to David’s practice within 6-9 months!

In terms of distraction from lower-level anxiety, I find things like podcasts or occasionally audiobooks good as a distraction when I can't quite settle to anything else. I'm not great at audiobooks as my mind tends to "wander off" but a shorter podcast is a bit easier. One of my favourites is the BBC history podcast "You're Dead To Me". My other favourite (All Killa No Filla) is about serial killers, albeit an irreverant look at them, with very, very many off-topic tangents, but might not be exactly what you are looking for if the world is feeling a bit dark sometimes.

RE: ASKING FOR HELP please...

And here is our local one flying over the garden.

Thank you GrooveJet for that lovely reply. You may well know Oxcombe then? We are about 4 miles as the Kite/Buzard/Crow etc flies from Tetford along the Heath Road. I had a number of clients there mostly eith beef and sheep or else horsey-clients. In Louth we have some very good friends plus our[ our = my wife's really] shopping area though the most important place ther forme e is Louth Cycle Centre who built my bike up via modifications for meto race nowadaysas a Para-cyclit. They invariably do go out of their way to help me when necessary.BRAVO Louth Cycle Centre I say!!!

I find the goings on in our garden very entertaining, we have regular regular visitors and we set things up for them and make sure they have enough water etc. Is your garden being enough for a couple of pet sheep??
Hello again /Gill, My wife is the gardener so i cannot intrude on her hobby/pastime if you don't mind? We do try to encourage wildlife, those not scared off by Wiggo the Cat ourMaine-Coone cross who is quite a keen hunter of course. He manages to get mice and voles through his Cat Flap easily plus the poor bunnies he takes even a 30cm stoat on one occasion. Then as I've noted already, the single big excitement for me outsde are our Red Kites when they deign to come closeto the cottage Nice to see them 1/2 mile away and a few hundred metres high but lower/closer is the thrill!! An Occasional aparrowhaWk, for eg., hasing the Green Woodpecker can be exciting as well. But Apart from Kites the most excting raptor in this valley was tamidst a swarm of Martins, swallows and swifts as I was relaxing on our patio in he sunshine, thinking, Wow, thatis a big Swift!! Which of course it asn't it was a Hobby, a long way from their normal home in Dorset or Hampshire. But they have been seen a lot in Lincs, jut not by me. We do have a Peregrine nesting nearby on Louth Church Spire, quite well-known around here. Not as exciting as he Hobby though! Lincs has had the Sea Eagle a couple of years ago as well that passed through here!! Do these all count as Wildlife Gardenening?/ Well experiencing wildlife from our garden..! My love of wildlife led me to wanting to be a vet many, many ears ago!

We already have t three sheep borrowed from Ian Heidi, friends in jSheep Vet Society, living near the Humber north of here Thanks...,

Thank you yet again for your help and adviice!
