This is a question for locums and also practices that employ locums.
I am planning to start a side locum job as sole trader. Never worked as locum before and I would really appreciate some advice.
As this will be a side job, I believe my

RE: Locum, sole trader, VAT

I've been told the reverse, that it is another thing which helps confirm your locum status as VAT business to business can be claimed back. I already had a first informal chat with an accountant. His feedback was that generally if I provide services to a VAT registered company charging them VAT should not make me less desiderabile. I believe the only exception would be if for that practice the output VAT exceeded the input VAT that should be unusual.

However, I remember that once a practice partner was commenting on a locum being more convenient as not VAT registered. So I posted on this forum as I was looking for direct opinion/first hand knowledge from practice owners that employ locums as well as locums.

RE: Locum, sole trader, VAT

As Julian points out, when I locummed 10 years ago, my first step was a chartered accountant. He told me about all the possibilities and I chose the most convenient. He didn't have any vet experience, but it was the best thing I could do and to this day I am grateful I did.

RE: Locum, sole trader, VAT

See also the previous recent thread about locuming

RE: Locum, sole trader, VAT

Yes you are right. I think it’s very unlikely any practice would be below the vat threshold so could claim back at the end of the quarter.
