I've been told the reverse, that it is another thing which helps confirm your locum status as VAT business to business can be claimed back. IR35 is the issue nowadays.

Hi Julian, Thank you for your reply. I already had a first informal chat with an accountant. His feedback was that generally if I provide services to a VAT registered company charging them VAT should not make me less desiderabile. I believe the only exception would be if for that practice the output VAT exceeded the input VAT that should be unusual.

However, I remember that once a practice partner was commenting on a locum being more convenient as not VAT registered. So I posted on this forum as I was looking for direct opinion/first hand knowledge from practice owners that employ locums as well as locums.

As Julian points out, when I locummed 10 years ago, my first step was a chartered accountant. He told me about all the possibilities and I chose the most convenient. He didn't have any vet experience, but it was the best thing I could do and to this day I am grateful I did.

Yes you are right. I think it’s very unlikely any practice would be below the vat threshold so could claim back at the end of the quarter. Good luck!

Hello, though I do not know the exact answer, should you not just ask a good Accountant who can detail it allfor you? Then job, sorted? Might cost a little bit,it but not as much as apotentially very expensive mistake surely??
