Well, I wouldn't call it an argument! I think it is an inexact science, and they weren't out by a lot, and the valuer said, very fairly, that if I could show examples of cars that justified a higher valuation, he would consider it, which is exactly what they did.

If they were that fair you wouldn't have had to argue!! . But at least they capitulated! I'm not sure how well I would be able to argue over my 11 year old Nissan Micra- it's probably worth around 50p (Although with inflation maybe £1?? )

The shortage of semi-conductors has made new cars more lengthy a process. Waiting lists are longer and most people don't want to wait!!

Apparently quite a few parts for new cars are manufactured in Ukraine so that is not going to happen for now either!

I did! And I have to say, my experience of Aviva is that they have been utterly fair. They agreed with my (detailed) argument for the car being worth £1400 more than their initial assessment. I've put a deposit on a reasonably like for like car, same year, same mileage, a few less toys but a bit more pimped up (drug dealer darkened windows).

Looks like I am going to get out of this even-steven, which is a far, far, far better outcome than I was expecting.

Always argue with the insurance company! They try tp get away with the lowest offer they can (someone working for an insurance company actually admitted this to me!) We had a fire years ago that destroyed my kitchen. The insurance company asked me to inventory everything and find prices , so I did (long laborious task!!) Then they offered me £2K less! When I asked why they said they could source some of my goods cheaper from a different place. i checked it out and found that most of my goods were actually dearer from there, so put in a new claim for £500 more!! Whereupon they offered me my original claim amount, but by now I was mad, and held out for the full sum!

Well, I've had the first offer from the insurance company. I was assuming it would be dreadful, and actually not too bad.

I think they are out by about £1,400, (and my garage says they would put a forecourt price of £2400 more), but that's not bad in the grand scheme of things. And whilst I am not as clever as your daughter's boyfriend, the car has only lost about 10K in nearly 4 years, which is pretty good if you ask me!

Richard Carter So difficult to find a matching car. But I think I have got one pretty close. So we'll see what the insurance co says about my analysis of the market!

My daughter's boyfriend bought a Skoda (big one) brand new (or delivery mileage) and sold it nearly a year later for more than he paid!

Well, if you'd gone left to Frome rather than right towards Shepton Mallett you would have been fine. I saw Porsche in the hedge and did wonder. Very odd place to have an accident. Glad you are OK

Thanks Richard Carter - I will do exactly that. I knew you can negotiate, but it's easy to forget and just think you have to accept what they're offering. I guess I need to go and find one that has the same spec and say to them ... there you go, go and buy it!

Yep, my broker said the same, with a little luck I may not do so badly after all, though trying to find a replacement with the same spec will be very difficult either way.

You're clearly either quite the optimist or haven't dealt with insurance companies lately: rule of thumb is take your assumed value in Farenheit and convert to Celsius

Yep, car now in the pound, being assessed by an engineer to decide whether it is a write off. Then I have the nervous wait to find out what they think it was worth (which I am quite sure will be at least £10K less than what I think it is worth).

Hope you're on the mend and not too shook: I always find that accidents where you've only yourself to blame are easier to get over than those caused by a third party. Something about perception of control, maybe?

Glad to see it was a Cayenne, though: do it in style!

PS. I love the "oncoming tree" remark. If only those buggers would stay still!

I was!

Someone drove into my rear offside, pushing the car through about thirty degrees, straight into the path of an oncoming tree.

I was fine except for a bit of airbag burn!
