Nowadays the basic bookkeeping tends to be done online. We use software called Zero. We can enter the invoice details here or send the paperwork to them for them to enter. They can do payroll.

So much stuff has to be done online so HMRC can nose about! Pensions get worked out with pay and personal tax returns are also done.

Our accountant had links to certain banks and were happy to work with them when we struggled with RBS. Good advice on how to expand vet numbers and produced all the required projections.

So what would most people do themselves and what would you get the accountant to do for you? payroll, book keeping, pension organising for staff, personal tax returns, vat returns, preparation of annual accounts etc

We have had so many poor experiences with accountants. Charging vast amounts for next to sod all work.

When we started we used Phil Chaplin at what was Chaplin Associates. They hit staffing problems and I decided to change. Frying pan into the fire! We rejoined and have been using them in their new incarnation:

Chris Chaplin has taken over from his dad!

All seems to be dealt with competently and it is very easy to have a discussion with Chris!

He deals with restaurants as well as vet practices.

His description of lock down was a perfect sh+tstorm. He kept our heads well and truly above water throughout COVID. There was moral support in bucket loads if not all the answers.

We pay monthly by standing order, the amount presumably relates to practice size and how much you do in house. Nothing anywhere near the quote you have had but the practices may not be comparable!!

We used Moore Scarrott for many years & would highly recommend, a good proactive vet industry accountant can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Ours is a general accountant and very helpful with everything including payroll. Definitely cheaper that your quote.

That’s a lot more than we pay for sure (5 vet FTE practice, North Yorks). Ours is a general accountant but has been doing our accounts for years - previously with a much bigger practice but he set up on his own and we moved to him mid Covid due to poor service from the other firm.
