Not a chance in hell of practices returning into the hands of vets.

The corporate model is a massive pyramid scheme which is now multinational. At some stage the 'owners' will realise the real economics of the profession and bubbles will burst.

Relentless price increases on practice takeover will only be acceptable to a certain degree before clients and/or their insurance companies reject them.

It was almost inevitable that unsuitable individuals run 'fertility' clinics and potentially employ vets with limited experience to comply with the law. If bulldog breeders are happy to entrust their pets into the hands of someone with nothing more than beauty therapy experience then they are hardly likely to be too particular!

Agreed - hopefully may come with the suggested reforms in the legislation - though that’s going to be a long way down the road.

Think the only way to deal with these is to be reporting concerns to the local Trading Standards - but they have to be interested and resourced enough to look into it

It seems such a dreadful oversight that the RCVS has no jurisdiction over practices themselves (or that non-vets can own practices), but even if they did, I can't see how they could ever police it ... I mean they don't have the 'heavies' needed to close these places down.

The owner was in court a couple of weeks ago (Hamilton Sheriff Court, look up the charges against him and his wife, they are awful!) His wife was bailed, but he was remanded in custody, as far as I know, but news has all gone quiet on the case, so who knows!

Because there is nothing to stop them.

The RCVS only has control over its members, so if its owned by a non vet, over to trading standards and the police.

I found the vets name somewhere but he is Italian so you are correct on that. Similar to above I'm feart to say anything about it but I've heard and seen so many bad things. Lots of people getting cherry eyes snipped out conscious in dogs, had a Pyo seen by ourselves that was told was pregnant after AI by themselves only 2 days prior - pouring with pus. The owner still thought it was pregnant as we took it to surgery and removed 1kg uterus filled with pus. I've heard a lot of bad things. All the Vets in the Glasgow area know of this establishment.

The RCVS can only regulate its members', us. It has no authority or control over anyone who is not a MRCVS. If this or other such clinics are owned and operated by non-vets, then it outside of their remit

The RCVS can act against any MRCVS who is employed by such a clinic though, if our code of conduct is being breached.

The way of redress is through the police, if any criminal activity has taken place, or through trading standards.

It's all connected, money laundering and also money with very mild potential consequences. I bet his vets are from abroad, are RCVS registered but as long as no complaint against the vet the RCVS has no right to investigate. NO name on website, good luck finding out who the vet is, even as a client.

This is not the only practice of its kind, there is one in Manchester, one in Birmingham and one in Essex. The rumour is they crop ears, get microchips from the states and so on.

The truth is RCVS can't do much. They may be VMD compliant. The rest is impossible to prove unless clients come forward and they won't. If they are shut down he will open a new one with a different vet.

I would imagine that any vandalism/ "fire-bombing" is more related to the owner's primary career rather than his more recent venture into breeding....

The colege can't do anything about the premises, they can only act if there is a complaint about the vet that works there. They can support trading standards or VMD re medicines irregulalrities, but other than that they are powerless.

It's not explicitly in the suggested new standards either, which is a mistake

It's very close to me! extremely dodgy indeed, there are more than a few stories, but I wouldn't like to spread gossip! Also apparently the proprietor is to be feared! Can't believe it took so long for the Royal College to do anything about this place..

I'm astonished that the RCVS are not more proactive about this and other similar places. They will no doubt claim that they have no powers to deal with it - that seems rubbish to me. At the very least they should be repeatedly inspecting the premises (weekly/monthly?) to see if there are actually any vets on site and if so if they are complying with their professional responsibilities. Seems a far better use of their time than threatening to expose MsRCVS for not recording CPD properly
