I still smile about a menu I saw in a restaurant in St Tropez many years ago, which said: 'Our chef, Pierre, will amaze you with the brighlights of his papillas'.

I think on balance, I would rather Pierre kept his papillas to himself.

OK, quite like this game

First discovered in 1982 where 2 young cyclists on a month long bicycle tour round Europe. We hadn't even been out of the country. Encountered this in France (still going strong)

In Germany there is a chain of dog groomers called DOGing Station.

And outside an Italian restaurant I read the German sign first which mentioned a ‘penalty notice of the week’. Then in English it was ‘fine of the week’. At last the Italian which said it was open on ‘fin de semana’, the weekend!

I remember once in Egypt there was a man selling food from a hand cart on the beach. Proudly signed ''Foul sandwiches''. We didn't try it.

Slightly different - but in France our local ladies' hair salon was called 'Fanny Coiffeur.'

When we were in Menorca many years ago, we used to love going down during the day to look at the menu for that night in our hotel, and guessing what things actually were (they were obviously translated similarly!)

There was often "salad to the garden", but occasionally "peas to the gardener" and "poultry to the oven " , but we were particularly excited to see "Wolf of the sea" on the menu. Turned out to be Sea bass. Less exciting.
