Facebook and Instagram are largely just vanity driven crap and scroll bait. But WhatsApp has developed into a truly useful mode of communication, including within the workplace, and I haven't had to actually pay for an overseas phone call for years thanks to WhatsApp

Bizarrely you also get the same functionality from Facebook Messenger - just perhaps not quite as user-friendly

Interesting - had a press release yesterday to my gadgetman persona, which revealed that search queries for 'how to delete facebook' went up by 1500% yesterday after the outage, and how to delete Instagram was up by 809%

A spokeperson for the company that did the research said: “It’s fascinating to see how a global outage affecting major social media and communication platforms - Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp - can lead to such a massive hike in people searching for how to delete their accounts on their own. There has been increasing focus on social media and its relationship with mental health, and it's interesting to consider that just a few hours without social media may have encouraged people to rethink and readjust their use of it"
