Clearly many are well-known, easily recognisable tunes but Mr Wakeman does them all a very great justice.

I cannot see that a keyboardist of similar talent , for example, Keith Emerson could do these tracks as well as Rick Wakeman has done...

But the point is really, this album is so brilliant it never fails to make me smile, which is the purpose surely? As is the purpose of my posing the question in this thread's title! Thanks for reading...

I was driving back from a horse call and phoned the practice that I was on my way and to get ready for ops. I was put on hold and the hold music played. In those days the nurses brought in their tapes (yes it was that long ago) and put them in the machine. I listened to "I can't live if living is without you" I was glad I wasn't a client phoning to check if my dogs ashes were back

Insomnia Rules Again - but this time it has allowed the uncovering of a long-overlooked memory!

Part of my educational background included musical learnings and leanings - principally through having a fiddle stuck under my chin at an early age (at my own behest) having attempted the piano but moved to "lodge" per week with a family whose only keyboard was an ancient harmonium organ-type thing driven by a pair of foot paddles which, at 7yo was a couple of treads too far. I still have a soft spot for such an instrument, often found lurking under generations of dust-sheets in the deep recesses of elderly dilapidated village halls - and having played/performed in a goodly number of these throughout Herefordshire I can vouch for the veracity of my comment borne of experience!

From fiddling, and orchestral playing came the odd desire to take O and A level Music. Sod all use for a career as a vit'nery other than lulling farming clients to sleep... BUT it did introduce me to the wonder that is Cesar Franck's Symphony Number one in D Minor. Oddly enough it is his ONLY symphony, unusual in having only 3 movements, and having some marvellous recurring themes and motifs throughout - and several thundering climaxes to stir the blood.

Doh!! How could I have forgotten this one? And for his website of all places?? An old album [from 1969!], entitled Alice's Restaurant. Allegedly based on a "true story" in the USA at the time of the Vietnam War and it is a gentle/humorous /sarcastic protest at the insanity of that time. Not only this but it was written and sung by our very own Arlo Guthrie!! Don't believe him if he denies it, it has to be him! Or maybe, the Son of the famous, at that time, country singer \Woody Guthrie...! ! The Alice's |ResTtaurant Massarcree[sic], ! being the title track. Thoroughly recommended even for youngsters on this site who might well have no idea of what I am talking about!? "Vietnam War?? What on earth was that etc., etc??

I've found tears trickling and felt obliged to make suppressed choking noises during movies.... for instance during Darkest Hour (Gary Oldman is such a fine actor)... or at the end of The Railway Children ( the later version, Jenny Agutter as Mother)... or the very last line in The Dam Busters.

My wfe Annika and I went to a wedding reception lastnight which proved to be an excellent "do" and lifted my spirit enormously! when the opportunity arose adked theDJ tomplay a favourite tuneguaranteed to make me smile! He kindly responded Yes, it will be on next! So insteadof sitting there enduring Justin Timberlake et al..., the very next tune did the job: Lou Bega and Mmbo Number 5!Th opening chords had me smiling and almostimmediately Annika was up there on the dance floor amongst all the other beautiful young ladies strutting their stuff. Ihd been resistant to doing this but could not resist joining Annika! Fortunately no camera-en were aroud plus I did not embarrass myself by losing balance and falling over! Nope, I was grinning madly to myself, eventually even laughing out oud at the pleasure of this dancing around to a great lively tune!

I googled the tune and this came up. Is this okay Arlo?? If too risque at times, I'll delete it Arlo But the song is just uplifting to me!! thanks,,,

Jst discovered another one,, from a film thias time. When just a kid a few years ago, as in the 1960s! there used to be radio shows on the Beeb called Family favourites and Children's Favourites. On this later were some regulars eg the very , silly ones likePuff the Magic Dragon and similar nonsense but on the Family series were other semi-regularsincluding this one from Henry V , =the original film from 1415, with the most famous speech in British History We haoppy few, we Band Of Brothers..., On St Crispin's DAY!! etc.. The charge from Agincourt is just utterly riveting and exciting! It was a real education tos see such abattle filmed in real-life!!

Thanks Evelyn, Carmina Burana is a good suggestion! On a different tack, one guaranteed to raise a smile is this one: Lou Bega and Mambo Number 5! Almost irresistible to resist in tempting me to dance IYSWIM? But I would not dance in public, nowadays to save my life! Correction; that is the only reason I Would dance in public if it was a case of life or death!! Otherwise NO WAY, just NO WAY!! Other tracks, recently re-discovered on my shelf: An old favourite group of mine, MIDNGHT OIL. A bit too self righteous for some what with their protests about degrading the environment and mistreatment of the aborigenes but musically and lyrically I love their stuff The Drums ofHeaven is incredibly catchy I find!! Thanks for reading/listening!

One final one, literally a classic piece: The William Tell Overture, Just impossible not to smile when hearing this! Brilliant!!

Also Rites of Spring! Great music always associated in my head with the film Fantasia! Other classical stuff should be on my list as well...:

William Tell Overture, just makes me smile which is the object of the exercise! Plus, New World Symphony by Dvorak; The Four Seasons by Vivaldi especially Winter remindig me intensely of very, very happy memories out i the snow taking my last pet dog out for long, long walks/exercise of two hours or so, around Eccup Reservoir inLeeds! = Where I grew up. I loved that dog moe than any other pet in my life.** A rescue who was an adorable Labrador temperament but was thrown out of Obedience Classesb for being too excitable in the presence of other dogs!! 30 years later and I can still feel his fur under my fingers if I try! Plus see him lolloping about in snow 2 feet deep! Is lolloping a real word??

**No it is not a competition but He Caspar won it anyway! He made me understand why people might jump into the raging sea to rescue a dog ...!! He would have died for me and it was a mutual love between the owner and the pet!

Thank you Clive, A man of the same mind asme, even the same time-period! I listen to stuff like Alice Coopert, Golden Earringand Steely Dan, all with fairly specific memories assocated with them! Alice might seem like an odd choice but listening to his lyrics I think he sings a lot aboutlove, helping others, being lonely! eg: "Might As Well Be On Mars!" But having seen him in concert in Leeds in 2019, which was brilliant, he does tend to cheer me up!
