This. I try to educate owners on the relationship between drug dealers and dog breeders. But I doubt if I've had more than five people in 11 years of practice come to me to ask my advice on what type of dog they get *before* they buy one.

We had contact from a person whose vet is in Oldham yet we are in the New Forest. Declined to add to our books as we are unable to take on such new clients!

Surely it's within the RCVS's remit as they are performing veterinary procedures without veterinary supervision?

I m pretty shocked how many of these places have popped up. Some with just Facebook pages which have no other contact details..Most have no information on who is performing the procedures,AI, progesterone testing etc.

Several clients of ours have said-Oh,the breeder does the AI ? Really ?

We have one of these near us,run by a guy who has been charged for drug dealing and puppy farming. His stud bulldogs are horrific examples of the breed! I think he must have a vet in his employ as he offers elective C-sections too....

Far more lucrative than drug dealing, I guess

There is almost no trust between many breeders and their local vets. Little trust between vets and local breeders.

Until purchasers change buying habits and ask serious questions then little will change.

Had an owner refuse our microchipping on price only to find that the lady she paid, arrived, chipped, left without any discussion or explanation. Next shock was to find that she had to pay extra to register the chip on a back-bedroom database nobody has ever heard of!

Cost about the same as ours but we offer a conditional lifetime guarantee on all our chips and they are implanted by a professional!!

I've thought this for a while. Many places advertise it and there isn't any clear evidence vets are involved. RCVS won't do anything because they're not vets. Police or Trading Standards I'd say.

Then again, there are vets that are still doing cherry eye removal under local that get away with it all.

Trading standards best bet. Not sure the police will be interested unless referred through by trading standards.

'Become a vet in a weekend' courses are still being run.

They claim to run DEFRA approved courses that show the easy steps from pet owner to breeder!

As far as I am aware the DEFRA link relates to microchipping!!

These people are dangerous and feed the 'fantasist' in wannabe vets on a budget. Unless someone stamps on it hard then it will continue to sprout like weeds.

Trading standards seem to be the starting point. Not convinced that anything is being done about these so called clinics. They are the new 'dog walkers'.

Sprouting like weeds sadly.

Does anyone out there realise just how unqualified these people tend to be? they make homeopaths look highly qualified!
