Dog ownership has changed

Gone are the days of a lovely long nosed dog in the corner that is bomb proof, you take it for a long walk and it knows its place. I stayed with friend a few weeks ago who has a collie. Blea knows his place. He has a bed and that's where he lives.

Today's dog need stripping, grooming, live on sofas, snort a lot, wear ridiculous harnesses and are generally lords of the house.

A client is in a consult to have an issue sorted. I had 2 vet students in with me last year, a 20 minute appointment and I couldn't get a word in edgeways for 10 minutes as they told the client how cute, wonderful and generally adorable their dog was. It's a world I don't want to live in

A dog is a dog, sorry folks

Sorry Bob, why is that a stupid question? My answer is simply yes, it was the reason!! Interest in wildlife mainly but loving our pets did lead to me thinking of what job I could do as a grown-up to work with animals? The only job I knew was that chap who looked after Jet our Labrador cross Wolfhound! when I was actually just 7 or 8 years old! So is that a stupid answer to a stupid question? I don't think so!! But I have been pleased to fulfil that childhood dream! Jet was a fantastic pet, big, stromg and docile enough for my sister and I to ride on his back ( separately not together!) I can still feel his slightly wiry fur under my fingers, a few years later!! [ few = 53!! So yep I became a vet because I did luv animals, specifically our own pets!

Yes - veterinary journalism tends to be very much at the bland and wishy-washy end of the spectrum.

I had an editorial meeting last night with my new partner in crime, us both having read all your thoughts. Have to say, I always had my reservations about the value of reading the headlines (when the written version is there anyway). Esp. because vet news is rarely 'drop everything now' news.

I knew it needed to offer something over and above what the written version does. I hoped that might be either for its amusement factor (subjective!) or because it offers a short summary of what is happening. But it seems neither of these things are really strong enough.

So, as a result of your feedback, we thought we'd try a different tack.

Each month, we'll pick the most viewed or commented or remarkable news story, and I'll find someone to interview about it in more depth.

So for example, if there is an interesting disciplinary case, I might go and talk to someone from VDS about the broader ramifications. Or if there is an interesting new product launch. This month, I thought it would be interesting to talk to Owen Monie, because he appears to have a unique setup, and I think it would be interesting to hear what he has to say about it.

Any thoughts? Also open (now or at any stage in the future) as to issues and the people it would be interesting to explore those issues with further.

RE: The (Veterinary) News. I’m busy, work full time, have an elderly parent to visit and my own life to live. Veterinary life has also been harder over the last 15 months and I’m happy to look at VetSurgeon to see what’s happening but usually don’t comment on things because of time constraints. I don’t watch videos on Facebook no matter how amusing they are supposed to be, life is just too short.

I pick up veterinary new snippets from VetSurgeon, other veterinary emails, and general veterinary chat and social media. Between the mix I seem to pick up most relevant things.

I like to speed read and then home in on things I do actually want to read about. The problem with a news video is that you are captive to watch/ listen to everything even if it’s of no or minimal interest. If you try to speed through you can overshoot the next item and waste more time than just letting it play through.

For many of the above reasons, although I was aware of the new round ups I’d never felt compelled to play one. I looked at a few today before I commented.

Format. Okay. More comment and analysis would be one person’s viewpoint unless various veterinary contributors were asked for comment. Wouldn’t usually appeal to me. For a compelling news story, eg a RCVS survey, I have found it useful to read some debate and varied opinions.

Lighthearted presentation, fine. The and finally part reminds me of 1970s comedy but that’s not a problem!

Thumbnail at the start- I see 4 pictures and no headlines. I’m looking via this forum not You Tube. Nothing to compel me to listen.

Background - fine by me. If I was a regular viewer I may find it interesting to watch the recording “on location “. If I stumbled on such a recording I’d maybe find it amusing or maybe annoyingly light hearted if id had a particularly trying day in the current pandemic and with the struggle to plan a holiday away.

All in all I’m probably not your target audience especially if you are trying to tell me that the written word is so yesterday and a video roundup were someone else chooses what will be of interest me is the new way forward.

I probably wouldn’t watch more because I’ve already read about the things in the round up ( even if that’s just a headline and I’ve decided that’s all I want to know on that subject for the time being.

RE: The (Veterinary) News.
Arlo, I like the format personally and Im not sure it needs improvement. I would reference my podcast. I get 50 downloads for a badly recorded episode one day, and nothing for two days in a row in something I've spent too many hours. I have decided that my podcast is my baby. I will accept reviews and suggestions but I enjoy it doing it for me.

My only question is whether I can have a link to the embedded video so I can play on YouTube directly. I. Not sure if its my crap phone but I struggle to watch within the embedded player as the playback stops whenever I move the phone, and with a 8 month old, it gets moved all the time!

RE: The (Veterinary) News.
Which is why I thought trying to make it (a bit) more amusing would perhaps make it more popular. Then again ... But I do wonder whether additional analysis might make it more useful / interesting. But then I could add that in the written articles.

Yeah but, in that case why are side bars on every site I visit, inviting me to do this that or the other, AND I don't even have to click, I know it's there if I want.

Thanks Rob Davis. Yes, perhaps trying to make vet news more exciting by presenting it, and adding a bit of humour is what you might call polishing a turd!
