I am not enjoying this at all. This is probably due to other "crisis factors" in the profession at the moment. I have found it exhausting and it is taking a lot longer than the RVCS have estimated. I am having to do it in my own time, though I will be able to claim TOIL when things calm down.

I don't think clinical directors have realised how much more "immersive" this is meant to be? I feel I will have to have my "advisor hat" on constantly - all day, every day - when I am in the vicinity of my (two) new grads. Given we have two sites and work quite varying shifts I am going to struggle to see them as much as I feel I should.

I am worrying how I will do this alongside my own primary duties, which are not light!

It's a shame I'm not having more positive feelings because I have had coaching myself and I fully support this way of trying to support the new grads, a lot of work has gone into providing the course. Educational psychology appears to be a fascinating subject.. but I haven't got the time or inclincation to add this string to my bow currently.

Maybe I am overthinking it, I will be taking on my 5th and 6th new grads and I just don't think I'm getting any better at it.

I'd be interested to hear how other people are finding the training and feeling about how it is going to work?

RE: VetGDP training

I signed up because I like teaching and thought it might be relevant if I were to head into that field.
Failed the module 1 quiz at first because I was struggling to keep my eyes open and brain in gear for that long…

RE: VetGDP training
It is the newest thing from the rcvs for practices with new graduate
Tgank you Joyce. One fewer thing to worry about for me then? I am of course, still young but accept hat I am no longer a new graduate! If new grads want the benefit of my experience[s] them they should read my books!! Their career will be full of surprises!!

Thanks again Good Lady! xx

RE: VetGDP training

Fear not Julian. It is the newest thing from the rcvs for practices with new graduates, an experienced vet has to do the GDP training to support their new graduate. I’ve happily delegated to a younger vet, she will hopefully be in the profession much longer than I will. We have a new grad starting in august so will see whether it is better than the old PDP.

RE: VetGDP training
Possibly just me being senile and the bright younger folk will sail through.
You called?

Bearing in my that officially I am now retired out of practice, what is GDP training please? I cannot recall seeing this described in the Record or elsewhere so sorry if it is a daft question!

Therefore I have to ask, Do I need to do this as animals are, by and large safe from my attention nowadays! But if it is interesting I might still do it... just Because I can! But NOT if it is just an unnecessary stress for me !

Thank you for your considered responses,

I thought I'd give it a go - not that I would ever actually use it at this stage in my career - but interested to find out more.

Got thro' Module 1 OK.

Module 2 I found very dry and unless you are keen on academic educational psychology a bit less than riveting.

Did the quiz art the end of Module 2 and failed dismally about four times - rather lost interest at that point and haven't been back yet.....

I've so far beeing doing it for 30 minutes here or there when at work, but am going to have to spend some evenings ticking all the boxes to get through it in time.

The format of Module 1 so far seems to be 'read this document about a part of the vetGDP. then reflect on it. Then watch a video basically reading out and going through the word document that you've already read'.

It's vert convoluted and so much longer than it needs to be. Very RCVS.
