I think this is such a good way of looking at it - aiming for constant growth surely isn't sustainable, so providing a great service to the clients you do have can't be a bad thing!

Not everyone wants to continue to "build"!! We have had our books closed for over a year!

I get from a purely business model, this is not ideal. However, I like being a small practice, having a small team that works closely together, and knowing most of my clients by first name. If we took on more clients we would not be able to provide the service we want to- we would be more rushed, fewer appointments, or we would have to grow, and lose the personal feeing. Money isn't everything, and more clients are not always better than fewer loyal and appreciative clients

I just have a feeling that your practice would easily ompete with any,or all, particularly those that have a "monopoly" !

If you are in a practice that is in demand then you are probably in a position to dictate terms. Around here one group has a near monopoly on practices so may be able to dictate terms.

How would these registration fees be gathered?

"Thanks. I'll pay when I come in" seems the obvious reply although some charge the consult fee in advance by card payment??

We don't charge one but why should it necessarily be free? Is it a practice builder? Is it just clients cherry picking and bouncing between practices?

Of course they are fully entitled to have more than one practice but is it really inappropriate for them to pay for the privilege?

For some time owners have had a lot of the power and some misuse it. Some practice models have empowered this behaviour and it is no bad thing that some clients are forced to rethink their relationship with 'their' vet.

Should be free! A great practice builder! Age [enter] last Vacc. [enter] ,speyed [tick] or last season [tick]........ wormed [date] Checkup [date] even previous vet??

Wish I'd thought of it !!

PS add hours etc and anything else that will be attractive to new or floating pet-owners needing details of a vet if they haven't got one!

We have a local 'not for profit' practice near to us that charges a re-registration fee if clients go elsewhere. It's not obvious, but in the small print of their charging information on the website.

Ironically they often refuse to see things OOH because they're too busy so we end up seeing them.

We do see a few non-clients coming to us for OOH rather than travelling further to their vet's OOH provider. We did consider the registration fee years ago, but often the clients that come to us OOH stay as out clients and don't go back, so we end up better off anyway.

Well this is new quite recently, they were not charging this before. Re registration fee if not seen in the last 12 months in the current context seems a bit unfair, as we have certainly been delaying people and therefore they can end up not having been seen in the preceeding 12 months when they would normally have been in for vaccinations or other routine stuff. I would assume that is the same for all practices in the area.

I went today to check on a nursery. Daily pay plus registration fee. We wouldn’t have paid registration fee unless committed to stay.

We have used the 'books full' excuse to prevent a small number of ex-clients returning to the fold. Generally we are happy to get them back but some were more trouble than they were worth.

Agree with Dinu. Their practice, their business. I suspect it is to keep appointments open for their regular clients and avoid those who are ringing around practices to see who can see them soonest - which is unfortunately now becoming common as everyone gets booked up days in advance.

We don't charge one but if this is their pricing structure then why not? If a practice is open and transparent with their fees then why does it matter what they charge?

The only time I have known it used is OOH for practices doing their own OOH
