Splenectomy. In theory, It should be straightforward? A single discrete organ easy to find but always more blood vessels than expected it seems! Each dog seemed to have at least 3 or 4 more than the last case Go figure??

Approach to an Abdominal Ultrasound

How to perform a tFAST scan in a cat with respiratory distress to check for pleural effusion

Placing feeding tubes (NO and oesophagostomy)

Dealing with a bleeding bitch spay

Approach to a GDV

Approach to a Caesarian

More Experienced Vets:

Placing a Central Line (though MILA have a good one on their website)

Nephrectomy

Abdominal approach to neutering male rabbits. Would like to see at least one before doing the first one here. The surgery should not be complicated but always better to have seen one done first!

Never remove the descended testicle in a momorchid even if you write it in the notes in BOLD!

Use the descended ball to plot the corresponding spermatic cord and check the inguinal ring on the way.

Abdominal Crytchochid dog, as really anyone should be confident with these, as common in practice, but a few pointers are useful

Dentistry

For those of us over 40 it strikes me that dentistry is taught better now, but raising a flap in a cat to extract a line of pre-molars and molars would be useful

Thanks , excellent video . Apart from where the surgeon says it’s safe to dissect out ventral to the penile urethra but you want to avoid going dorsally . Then proceeds to dissect dorsally beyond the ischiocavernous muscles and bulbourethral glands . Without specifying how to avoid damaging the innervation to that area

ow about a ruptured cruciate repair? More common than any fractures n my experience and there are many techniques suggesting that none of them are perfect! I tend to agree having tried several methods with results varying from satisfactory with apparent pain-free use of the leg to the other end of the spectrum, this m being a disastrous outcome!

If here are any Liverpool graduates here taught by Prof. Ferek G. Lewis, have you tried his method of repair? The Modified-Transfer of the Long Digital Tendon I have but only a couple of times these falling into the disaster-category! I'd seen Derek perform his procedure a couple if times and it was vastly more tricky doing it myself. So I looked for an alternative with marginally better outcomes it turned out" Retinacular Imbrication if I recall correctly? Much, much simpler to perform! Less post-op stability of the stifle perhaps but at least a functional leg resulted this way!

When I was student in clinical years, I just needed access to routine surgeries, but at university exposure was mainly to referral procedures; hip replacements, PSS surgeries, thoracotomies etc. Standing watching a referral op for 5 to 6 hours, which I would in all likely-hood never carry out, was a poor use of study time.

Thyroidectomy in cats. I don’t do them as often now and the parathyroid gland never stands out as well as it does in the text books!

Properly replacing a nictitans gland with the pocket technique, just can't quite work out where I go wrong & mine popped back on a few cases then I passed them all to a colleague - who has now left & I can't keep avoiding it
