If my clients parents live in France for 6months of the year , could they get a French passport and would that allow them to travel into France from the UK without an AHC

Can I check if my pieced together information re travel from N.I. to England/Scotland and back for dogs is remotely correct.

1) People (with or without dogs) are asked not to travel currently unless essential/necessary to do so; this is guidance rather than legislation.

2) Dogs can travel freely from N.I. to England/Scotland with no paperwork.

3) Dogs returning to N.I. from England/Scotland require paperwork.

4) That paperwork could be either:

a) a Pet Passport (from a country other than England/Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland, or from Northern Ireland if issued in 2021)

b) a special one-of certificate valid for one journey only issued only in England/Scotland/Wales.

5) This paperwork must demonstrate a rabies vaccine more than 3 weeks ago in a dog that was more than 12 weeks of age at time of injection, and a tapeworm treatment in the preceding 24hrs-120hrs prior to scheduled departure time.

6) The government will not be enforcing this with quarantine in N.I. for those travelling without the correct paperwork until 1st Feb, but whether the ferry companies will take dogs without correct paperwork prior to that remains unclear.

Q: 7, however, I'm least clear on:

7) A lady travelling to England from N.I. on 2nd January for essential/necessary reasons, wishing to take her dog with her, can do so. Should she wish to be prepared to travel back to N.I. at speed if also essential/necessary in the next few weeks, what is she best to do?

? The lady would like some advice. Earlier today, I suggested contacting a vet locally in N.I. who does pet passports tomorrow, but so far as I can tell, there is no point issuing a Pet Passport in N.I. as this will not be valid after 31st December. A rabies injection can be given, but then can a vet in England produce a certificate for return journey in 3-4 weeks time from this injection done in N.I., and if so does this need to be a special vet in N.I. who has done the rabies vaccine (one currently approved to do Pet Passports), or would a rabies vaccine administered to a microchipped dog by any competent MRCVS (such as myself) by acceptable? Presumably a vet in N.I. (if a special one) if give rabies vaccine can then complete a NEW NI/EU Pet Passport when they become available and post recorded delivery to an address in England? But the online details remain a bit sketchy to know if this is definitely the case, and if so when such a NEW passport may be available....

The certificates do say date of implantation or reading of the chip. You can download certificates from the apha website to have a look through. And sigh.

Have you tried to get information from the dozens of back-bedroom databases?

We tried to get information from yet another microchip company that I had not heard of this morning. Pretty much only a phone number available.

Don't count on being able to find out the microchipping date from a huge chunk of the chips implanted.

Date of microchipping is recorded on the chip database - well Petlog anyway (just checked with one of my cats) so it should be possible to check the details by logging in using the microchip number

The rules appear to state that the owner has to provide proof of the date their pet was microchipped, does anyone know if it's still acceptable to say that the chip was checked on a certain date, as long as that is before the rabies vaccine.

If that is what the population want but I very much doubt this will happen in our lifetimes without an explosion of violence.

If this is part of the plan then they are playing with fire! An independent NI might just be accepted but not sure how viable it would be.

Having observed the troubles from GB as a child/teenager, we really should not be poking around with sticks!

I have no interest either way, but I think thats the most likely outcome.

Wow! We really have sold out Northern Ireland to the EU. An AHC is going to be required to take a pet to NI from GB.

I did suggest there may be advantages to having part of the UK in the EU (ie NI) so companies may have a base inside the EU without leaving the UK.

What an unnecessary mess!

I don't do OV work anymore but I always put chip read and the number in the notes - pretty sure that was VDS advice at some point because microchip numbers on the animal's record details can be easily changed, but not if they are in the history.

That’s a good point Emma. I always write on the notes chip checked when I do a rabies booster but obviously those are being put in a pet passport. I presume European passports are still valid for coming to UK and travelling back? I think owners with holiday homes abroad may be much better getting those longer term.

My thoughts here were how on earth do you certify the microchip was read prior to the rabies vaccination being given if only presented with a vaccination card? Those with current passports will be ok, but how about newly vaccinated dogs? Should we be issuing a letter each time stating that the microchip was read and recorded?

I have been completing export certification for live animal and export produce for years (albeit not in recent years). Not once have I seen a form so badly presented and worded. Translation by Google in places.

Part of the EU's 'big plan'?

I gather the RCVS are providing some guidance but not seen it yet.

Apparently EU issued passports are still valid but are we approved to fill them in after Jan1st?

I came here to post mostly the same thing. We have been issued a list of AHC certificate numbers and I’ve printed a sample AHC and the guidance notes. It says we are a third country, but then that we have part 2 status. There is information in the sample AHC about rabies blood tests but it is so wordy I can’t quite work it out. Although I’ve just spent an hour or so looking through it. It certainly looks as though it will be a prolonged process to go through per pet, I’ll have to have a think of how we will charge this. We also have to include a certified copy of rabies vaccination dates and identification, so a copy of pet passport for instance. But for new animals without a passport do we just use a vaccination record card?

The only upside might be that it appears to be limited to 5 animals (except for animals going to compete abroad) and only for non commercial purposes. Will this stop the street dog import trade?

It says they've agreed we'll be List 2 "in due course" whatever that means!

Animal heath cert - find on line in the right dual language (usually english/french) for cross channel travel; unique cert numbers on a control sheet prom defra, when you've used them email back and apply for more (so a bit like the current passport control sheet)
