I think the important thing is for me to convey how it is really for detailed clinical discussions, and ESPECIALLY those with experts. As has been said, nobody is going to be bothered to record 2 mins of reading something, unless perhaps if they were using the claim CPD to bookmark as well.

Which makes me think. Small detail. Perhaps I should relabel that 'Claim CPD/Bookmark' (if there is room)>. Then people might use it for small stuff for bookmarking, and then realise that they've accidentally accumulated an amount of CPD worth having!

(As a bookmark, you would still have to enter the time spent reading, though, and I wonder if it would be weird to click a link marked 'bookmark' and find you have to enter the minutes???)

RE: Everyone share this!

CPD, to me, is a pointless box-ticking activity (there is actually even a box to tick now)..

Thus I approach it in the same manner I do with any bureaucratic box-ticking activity - try to spend the least time possible ticking the boxes (although the RCVS seem on a mission to make me spend increasingly more time ticking their boxes...)

For me, that is taking a few large brush strokes in a short space of time that I can easily remember.

So I may use something that I have discussed on vetsurgeon, but I would do so freehand as part of a larger brush-stroke to tick my box quicker, perhaps:

"Lymphoma in dogs - investigated the current recommendations on the treatment of canine multicentric lymphoma [including posting on vetsurgeon], produced a client decision-making information sheet quickly-adaptable to future patients, sourced and administered epirubicin for the first time including learning about the practical health and safety implications, suitability for case selection including with murmur, and how to do this in clinic I work in, sought/provided detailed follow-up on a near-daily basis and managed severe GI complications after administration and discussed with colleagues; trained RVN in set-up and administration.

7-hours.

Reflection: In a patient just over 15kg, would consider dosing at 1mg/kg rather than 30mg/m2 in future, or perhaps going half-way between the two doses would make most sense. It makes little logical sense to have an arbitrary cut-off of 10kg or 15kg [different sources differ] below which one uses 1mg/kg (a somewhat convenient round number...) and above which one uses 30mg/m2.

Taking a 15kg cut off, this would mean that a 15.1kg dog gets 18.5mg (9.25ml which is worth noting is not that exact when supplied in a pre-drawn 10ml syringe), while a 15kg dog would get 15mg (7.5ml). A 23% dose increase for an increase of 0.1kg bodyweight would make little common sense... I will investigate this further [perhaps post on vetsurgeon].

Ordering a drug that is pre-drawn up is convenient in some respects, but inconvenient in others as did not keep for more than 48hours from dispatch which was a logistical nightmare"

OR perhaps:

"Read Schon's 'The Reflective Practitioner' and tried to understand its relevance to the RCVS's CPD recording system- 9hours

Reflection: I have spent 9 hours navel-gazing about learning rather than actually learning, I am now spending more time typing on a computer that I have just booted up about the fact that I have wasted my time in time to tick a box by 31st December, when I could have moved on to actually doing something useful. Most of my "reflection" (a word that I have now come to hate after subjecting myself to this useless book - I think I'll stick to the word "thinking" in future) occurs in my head, say when walking to work or having a shower, not by sitting in front of a laptop and typing. It is not quite clear that mandatory reflection could ever be actual reflection (as I type here I do not feel free to express my inner thoughts and true reflections quite accurately on the RCVS Reflective OneCPD cycle) making it all rather pointless. I will revert to my model of "maximise actual learning; minimise RCVS recording" in future. I remain unclear how mandatory this reflection really is: it is apprently to be mandatory to reflect, but one's reflections will not be used against one in a disciplinary setting - it would seem difficult to prove that a wayward MRCVS is not reflecting properly when simply writing "Boo-boo-butt" in the each reflection box to an independent disciplinary committee if one cannot disclose the contents of that MRCVS's reflections to that committee... I wonder if the RCVS has reflected on how they will make this truly mandatory then? If it proves to be neither truly 'reflective', nor truly 'mandatory' then what will happen to RCVS's new 'mandatory reflection' will they reflect on this and leave it as 'encouraged' reflection instead, leaving practitioners that don't find this anything more than an extra box-ticking activity free to do more learning on their own terms and less box-ticking on the RCVS's terms instead?"

Arlo: I think your video is excellent; I like the concept of peer-to-peer learning; I like the specialist input; I think your "claim CPD" function will appeal to many (possibly even a slim majority?) of vets; I have nowhere to personally share or promote this however.

RE: Everyone share this!
I wouldn't log CPD for stuff that is a more of a chat anyway - I'd only really log stuff where I've genuinely found clinical benefit. Just because I've discussed a subject online doesn't mean it was CPD.
I wasn't suggesting logging chit chat, only where you have found a clinical benefit!! And I think it is the general chit chat that may just be a couple of minutes here and there, whereas the clinical benefit stuff is where it is part of a bigger thing where you are thinking about something, researching it, and posting about it in a process that takes much more than a few minutes.

In other words, for clinical stuff, you don't just log the two minutes you spent reading a post, or writing a thread. You log the whole time spent on that subject, which may include research elsewhere etc.

RE: Everyone share this!

Yes, expert discussions definitely carry more value, and those are the ones I'm likely to log. Such as I've asked a clinical question, had a comprehensive reply and taken time to research it further..
Thanks!
I did used to use the claim CPD tab but, to be honest, with it just being a couple of minutes here and there it isn't now easy to log it.
I was thinking that taking part in a forum discussion could be worth 30 minutes for a detailed discussion. By the time you've composed your reply, or done any research for it, like looking for a reference). And as I hoped the video demonstrated, clicking 'claim cpd' and typing '15' or '30' and one sentence about what you learned / how you plan to use it should take seconds. The RCVS doesn't want an essay.

Absolutely agree that its not worth doing to claim 2 minutes (except as a bookmark). But for the more detailed discussions, I think you may be underestimating the time spent on the post. And as you say, at the end you have a log of records from here, so you don't have to repeat the exercise over there.

Put it another way. Log 4 15 minute sessions, and you've got an hour's free CPD from here (er, obviously), which may have taken you no more than 2-5 minutes to record.

Oh, and I guess I would have the same question as I put to Michael, which is whether you would see more value in recording discussions in the expert forum as CPD.

RE: Everyone share this!

I have shared it.

I did used to use the claim CPD tab but, to be honest, with it just being a couple of minutes here and there it isn't now easy to log it. The new system for logging CPD with the RCVS means that we don't have to just log, say, 30 mins of general online learning , but also reflect on our learning etc. It would be time consuming to translate all those individual minutes of learning onto my CPD record. I know you could attach a copy of the CPD log from here, but it seems more trouble than its worth.

RE: Everyone share this!
I understand what you are trying to do, but it's a no from me. I don't use the site to claim CPD, although I do learn useful things on here. In the same way I wouldn't log the bar at BCVA. It's not a feature I can ever see myself using. Sorry
Fair enough. Must say, I don't get the comparison with the bar, though. Here, you have a well documented bit of learning.

I know people do use it for CPD, the thing I was wondering was how compelling the message 'free CPD by helping each other' which seems to me to be a rather nice idea (if you buy in to the idea of claiming the CPD, of course!).

Two things Michael Woodhouse. First, watching that video, do you immediately make the connection to the idea that the 'Claim CPD' can be used as a really good way to keep a bookmark of the threads you have found interesting or have helped others? And is it useful as such? If Yes, and then No, then perhaps I need to refilm that video to make more of the claim CPD thing as a bookmark to all things useful.

Second, do you think you would feel differently about using it to claim CPD in the expert forums, where you are asking a question of a number of experts and getting a really top quality reply?

(In other words, is it the fact that in the main forums, you are getting opinions from a bunch of peers, and its that which you think is less deserving of the title CPD, whereas asking the country's leading expert on BRD about something would be rather different?

Everyone else please do give your opinions on this. I really do need your feedback if I am going to hone the message(s) to be as effective as possible, and encourage as much participation in these forums as possible.

RE: Everyone share this!

I understand what you are trying to do, but it's a no from me.
