It's definitely popped up for me when first accessing, and took me longer than it should have to work out how to close it and access the site.

I may have just been being exceptionally dumb (it'll be that pink hair, Michael Woodhouse ) but could be offputting to some? Might be worth digging into.

Great, thanks Rob. Good to know that someone other than me has seen it. This is my first stab at it, so now I know it works, I'll look at improving design etc. As to the stats, I should be able to see how many times the advert was presented, and then how many views on youtube.

Currently, for testing, it is set to appear no more than once per hour when you click certain links on the site. Now that I know it works, I'll turn it down, so that it appears, what, once per day? Could set it to longer than that, but I will start there.

It has appeared a couple of times for me this morning and works fine. I assume you can monitor how many people click on it an watch and how many bypass.

After a few days of hair-tearingly frustrating testing and tweaking and failing and testing and tweaking and failing some more, I THINK I have got the vetsurgeon adverts to appear when you click a link to navigate round the site. It would be really helpful to know if anyone else sees them, and what you think ...

A couple of people have commented about how it is all well and good making nice videos about VetSurgeon, but we need to get people to watch them.

One way of doing this, which I am trying to get working this morning, is to force visitors to VetSurgeon to see the video.

In other words, we get huge amounts of traffic to the site, but only a relatively small percentage engages.

I'm now trying a new way pf presenting an advert called an interstitial, where if you click a link, it will load an advert and grey everything else out.

I know - potential to be very annoying, but the plan is to limit interstitials so each user only gets presented with it once in a given period (might be a month). Also, we are not currently going to use them for anything other than site announcements.

Google makes it incredibly complex to serve these kinds of adverts, so I am not sure if I have configured it right. But if you see the advert running and have any thoughts, do let me know!

Hmm - really? Someone at our end made a similar observation about the mention of Vet Time and Vet Voices. My reply was that in neither case was anyone slagging off either of them. Camilla just said my news feed offered a different slant, which I think is probably true, and not a negative about VT, just a difference. And the comment about 'Vet Voices and other fora' I thought was OK, because a) again, it's not slagging off VV, it's just saying quality is something we really focus on over here, and b) it's not me saying it (and nor did I ask David to say it!), and c) will it alienate anyway? I mean, if I read the Daily Mail, I would not be alienated by the Times saying it was a higher quality publication. It just is! Oh, and d) We do need to get people to stop and think, and I am not convinced that is going to happen without being very clear about the differences between VetSurgeon and other places.

Dinu Catilina I'm not saying you're definitely wrong, just explaining how I see it. There is also a fly in the ointment that in the context of the rest of David's sentence, it would be impossible to edit out the ref to other fora, and I thought his final words on cherishing and everyone contributing were SO good, I would run the risk.

It looks really nice and personal Arlo, my only advice is to remove the vetvoices comment. You are not in a direct competition us vs them and you might alienate people who like that group regardless of their reasons. I personally agree with David's comment, it is more than pertinent but it is a bit low class to use it as promotional material.

Something like: "We at Fitzpatrick are the best" vs "We at Fitzpatrick are not only the best but also better than Dick White".

A few things ...

I am still on a learning curve as far as editing, colour grading etc, which is more challenging when taking clips from multiple different cameras, all with different settings.

Firstly, and most importantly, Camilla Edwards, David Mills, Lucy Fleming and Anthony Dennison, THANK YOU, very, very, very much. In particular, Anthony, for being the first to stick your hand up / head over the parapet, Lucy, for putting up with me for so long on Sunday and for the cup of tea, David, for what I thought was a VERY powerful closing thing to say, and Camilla for the variety of things you said (about news, jobs etc).

Film is currently unlisted on youtube. Would like to see what you all think after watching the premiere before I make further changes or put it out on general release.

For my part, I think first and foremost it is a far more compelling case for joining in on VetSurgeon than I could ever make. Do you agree? If you try and imagine yourself as someone who had never been to VetSurgeon.org, do you think this would make you visit? And do you think that if you were a site lurker, ie a long standing member who never posted, this might make you more likely to in the future?

I also think it's really nice to put a face to names. In fact, it's got me thinking harder about how we can do more of that (putting faces to names).

But enough about what I think, what do you think?

Great afternoon filming with Lucy Fleming yesterday, so that's three takes in the can now, and with Kate Richardson and Camilla Edwards's contributions on the way (!), I can see the makings of a blockbuster here.

I'm thinking now about how to hang it all together. In particular what the first few seconds should say that would keep everyone in their seats to watch the rest of it (it won't be a long video, BTW).

I was thinking perhaps I introduce the video, but naaaah. The important thing to convey here, very quickly, is what VetSurgeon members like about the site.

Maybe a plain black (or dark screen) with some dramatic music and a simple text intro. Something like: What do veterinary surgeons like about VetSurgeon.org?

Thoughts anyone?

That would be WONDERFUL, Camilla Edwards. Main thing to remember is to smile, look directly into the lens reasonably close up, and say a selection of clearly defined sentences that I can pull from. In other words, so far everyone is saying quite a lot, which is great, but in quite long sentences, which is harder to edit down into a compilation (ie if I have to cut someone mid sentence!)
