For many staff and particularly locums, the response from these organizations in setting a lead to what practices can do and cannot do over the next 4 weeks will be watched by practices in regards staffing

RE: RCVS/BVA response in the next 4 weeks

I have to admit I cannot see the value of a countrywide lockdown beyond making it easier to 'police'. Those yobbish teenagers should not be on the street therefore are targets to be questioned and parents fined.

I doubt compliance will be that great especially as the schools are open and spreading is happening there.

We will do our bit to minimise risk but will not attempt to close down as we did before.

I will try to furlough myself and the staff that were not furloughed before because I want and we may need the £1K per person in January!!

I just need to get my head around the rules first.

I know we will be paying back for this for many years to come.

RE: RCVS/BVA response in the next 4 weeks

Schools are still open , we are doing all the PPE things ,meanwhile outside on the car park other peoples 12-16 year olds gather in groups ,lurking waiting like a bad smell to play under and abuse our latest set of shelters. Apparently this lot are the ones still spreading it about on a willy nilly ad hoc basis . They can be seen chasing old ladies down the road who have just visited the nearby co op for their groceries, coughing at them, unmolested by the onlooking PCOs who appear about as useful as a chocolate teapot. So we follow the rules and carry on as normal while trying to reduce peoples unnecessary movements. BJ and the other Old Etonians may wish to review how its still spreading and in some places address the Lord of the Flies situation on some streets and estates .

RE: RCVS/BVA response in the next 4 weeks

But this is common sense!!

We will postpone routine procedures for the period but will continue with the work booked in.

Apparently the phone was ringing off the hook yesterday.

RE: RCVS/BVA response in the next 4 weeks

I'm currently doing a locum at a large independent mixed practice until the end of the year. So far, its business as usual with no talk of lay offs or furloughed staff, and I've been told I am still needed. We have not cancelled any appointments, but are not booking in any more routine stuff for now. Also going to return to more telephone triage and advice where appropriate, and delay checks ups for repeat prescriptions and flea checks etc. just applying common sense really.

This may change of course depending upon any RCVS guidance.

RE: RCVS/BVA response in the next 4 weeks

The context of the question was more nuanced than that

In March many practices furloughed staff, cancelled ,locums and went down to a skeleton staff, with knock on effects to many vets/nurses and reception staff, both working and at home

Many practices / IVC / CVS etc will be looking at the RCVS/BVA to provide a lead and guidance in this, with subsequent implementation in practices.

I would argue that a skeleton staff cannot run a surgery adequately. Yes lockdown is meant to reduce transmission, but we return to that old chestnut of where's the risk? Practices are very good, clients understand and we are there as an essential service to animals, but we can't expect the few to shoulder this when aside Dentists and Doctors we have more safeguards that practically any other business

 Neil

RE: RCVS/BVA response in the next 4 weeks

One may or may

not agree with it, but the whole point and purpose of the lockdown is to minimize unnecessary travel and movement of people.

Therefore I would have thought anything that can wait for a month or so should do; routine vaccinations, checks for anti-parasitics, med checks, checking and taking a fna of a suspect lipoma that has been unchanged for 18 months (had this yesterday)

Yesterday was manic. Folk seem to be panic booking. I had several vaccinations where they are not even due until December and January.

RE: RCVS/BVA response in the next 4 weeks

Yes most things we do have a health or welfare benefit, but does the rcvs guidance not ask us whether not doing it (or delaying it during lockdown) will have a health/welfare detriment? Pretty much everything we do has a health and welfare benefit - or we shouldn't be doing it.
Pleased BVA not embellished the RCVS rules as they did last time, with the daft traffic lights.

RE: RCVS/BVA response in the next 4 weeks

Here it is from BVA www.bva.co.uk/.../guidance-for-england-national-lockdown-nov-2020.pdf
