There are adverts all over radio and television talking about being prepared for the changes from January if any part of your business deals with Europe. If you employ staff on a contract from Europe you have to apply to be a sponsor and they have to be earning above a certain wage and be of required skill set etc. No where on the Gov website does it deal with locums. They must have been approached, half of the NHS runs on locums.

RE: European locum usage post Brexit
This may well be a pragmatic decision
UK membership of the EU has required the RCVS to recognise all veterinary degrees from all EU veterinary schools

With Brexit this enforced reciprocity will end, and the RCVS will exercise its right to choose which degrees from which EU schools it will recognise

However the RCVS lacks the resources to inspect the multiplicity of EU faculties and so has made the decision to recognise those educational establishments that are either accredited or approved by EAEVE (The European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education, a non-statutory body)

This decision was, and remains, contentious, for while EAEVE 'accredited' establishments have been subject to both inspection and assessment, the 'approved' school list is little more than a list of establishments which run a veterinary course, with no assessment/guaranteee of the course's quality

This may well be a pragmatic decision, given the UK's reliance on EU graduates to supplement the pool of locums, OVs, Meat hygiene vets, etc, but it means that the RCVS is preparing post-Brexit to accept graduates from veterinary schools of unproven standard

I wish I could offer more detail, but the discussions, even the EAEVE definitions, are cloaked by the 'confidential' label that excludes so many RCVS papers from view. And consequently this information may already be out of date

So this has been a long answer to a short question. If your locum has previously registered his/her degree with the RCVS, and has therefore been accepted as a veterinary surgeon allowed to work in the UK, then it is likely that he/she should be able to return. Especially if the locum graduated from an EAEVE accredited/approved establishment and he/she has a current RCVS registration. However if your locum is a graduate of a non-EAEVE accredited/approved faculty there could be problems. If his/her registration with the RCVS is current then the RCVS will not/cannot refuse his/her right to practice in the UK or his/her right to renew this registration. If however his/her registration has lapsed then he/she may be refused the right to renew this registration.

RE: European locum usage post Brexit

That's a hell of a commute!
