Sorry for the clickbait subject, but needs must!
As I mentioned elsewhere, I am planning to introduce rewards for good contributions to clinical discussions on VetSurgeon ...
There are a couple of ways to do this (or they can be done in combination

RE: Who'd like some money?

[quote userid="11493" url="~/001/nonclinical/f/site-support-discussions/29415/who-d-like-some-money/226118#226118"]I like the idea, but not a fun of using positive/negative voting.
Francisco Gomez I take your point .... but ...

The voting is transparent, which I think makes it less likely people will vote down, because they are accountable for it. The other important thing is that I am using the voting together with some of the other actions to highlight the best contributors, not to shame the worst!! Also, I think the voting up or down is actually quite useful in clinical discussions.

I think it will be OK, but you might be right and I might be wrong. It costs me more money to change things, so I'd prefer to start with things as they are, monitor closely and change if I need to. One solution is that I could hide the down arrow! Lets see how it goes.

RE: Who'd like some money?

I like the idea, but not a fun of using positive/negative voting.
Many of us have done great contributions where we have followed by the sentence 'retreats back to corner' or variations of it.

RE: Who'd like some money?

And what does everyone think of highlighting one top voted post in clinical discussions?

RE: Who'd like some money?

Much clearer, thank you.

RE: Who'd like some money?

Sarah Keir and anyone and everyone else who'd like to help me with this:

Three tweaks:

1. I have now added the word 'vote' to the arrows at the bottom right of every post, so as to make them more visible.

2. I have changed the setup, so that in each thread, ONLY the single most highly voted post gets displayed at the top of the page. It should really be only on the first page of the thread, but that is above my pay grade, and first I want to see what people think about the idea before spending money on the developers!

3. I have done a quick hack to differentiate the most highly voted thread at the top of the page, so you can clearly see it is the highly voted one (and only an excerpt).

I have NOT installed this sitewide, just in one forum at this stage, you can see the example here, where Malcolm Ness's post has deservedly taken its place at the top, and it just means that now a newcomer to that thread, or someone looking to refer back, can go straight to the juiciest post, or read in full:

https://www.vetsurgeon.org/001/veterinary-clinical/small-animal/orthopaedics/f/discussions/29332/can-i-use-prednisolone-in-chronic-arthritis#pifragment-5753=2

Thoughts everyone?

I do now have the points scoring system on place, I am working on refilming my intro video, and if everyone is happy with this setup, then we're off to the races.

RE: Who'd like some money?

Sarah Keir Thanks for that. The 'not differentiated' thing is a problem, but quite an easy one to fix. I suspect not appearing on subsequent pages would be easy to fix too.

I understand it might not make you vote more. Perhaps it might if you thought the person who had been so helpful would be rewarded financially as a result of your vote?!

I have now changed the system so that anyone who gets an upvote for their post (using the up arrows on the right) gets 10 points. Downvote gets minus 20.

RE: Who'd like some money?

I don't like that the top voted replies are not differentiated from the discussion thread - confusing. Also unnecessary to have them appear on each page of the thread. With the clicking that takes you to the page not the exact post, this is what happens currently when I click on continue reading in the forum list - it just takes me to the page that the last read post is on and I need to scroll to find the one with the blue bar on the left side. Because this is also using a blue bar on the left, this might be confusing as it now signals two things.

For me personally, its not going to make me reply more or vote more but I guess it will for some people - you could always trial it. It is the quality and breadth of discussion that brings me back so I'm unlikely to look at the top replies but carry on reading the full discussion if it is on a topic that is interesting.

RE: Who'd like some money?

Thanks Rob Davis, and for the purposes of testing, I upvoted Chris Barker's reply too. So there are now two highlighted replies at the top of the page.

My observations:

It doesn't actually change the order, it just places an excerpt at the top of the page. The full post remains in the correct place where it was before.

I've noticed that top replies are placed at the top of EVERY page in the thread, which is a not great - would be better if it were just at the top of the first page of the thread, I think. Else repetitive and you have to scroll past each one every time.

Top replies are not well enough differentiated from the rest of them. That is an easy fix.

When you click the text of a top reply, it takes you to the page where the full post is, but you then have to scroll down to look for it (has a blue bar to identify it). Not the end of the world, but would be better if it autoscrolled.

My thoughts are that it could work if we restrict it to the ONE top post overall, separate it visually, and make it appear only on the first page.

Do you agree?

RE: Who'd like some money?

Rob Davis could you try it on that thread i linked to above, and let's see!
