What do people take the phrase ' protect from light ' to mean in context of drugs either by injection or CRI?

I usually took it the mean don't store on windowsill but do we need to vet wrap bottles etc

Everyone sees interesting cases every week, we deal with them and move on.

A few on here post them, the vast majority don't, I've often wondered why?

Time?

A fear of looking silly?

Judged by your peers?

It's a bit like CPD really there are various types of questions

The one I like is the one that everyone is too embarrassed to ask as it seems to basic, where in reality everyone is glad someone did.

Neurology:

1) Do corticosteroids still have a place in the management of acute onset spinal disease, particularly in cases where referral or surgery are not viable options?

2) Is it still possible to investigate seizures without a CT/MRI scan?

Laughed out loud. And of course you can buy chocolate and malt with amazon vouchers.

What do you think is the smallest value voucher that you would think it's worth coming and chipping into an online discussion for (esp if that was not normally your thing)? I'll start the bidding at £20.

what about a back to basics, or on a budget, series, where diagnostic tests are limited to those absolutely essential only?

Most of my work takes me to poor areas where folk cannot afford expensive diagnostics for every case and every presentation, so what about a series of discussions along the lines of;

1) How do treat a lameness case on a budget?

2) How do you approach the coughing dog where money is limited?

3) How do investigate an elderly cat losing weight, again limited finances?

Quick update. My whole master plan for promoting quality clinical discussions needs me to get a few things organised .. specifically

a) a good list of topics, thanks for the suggestions so far, and keep 'em coming: https://www.vetsurgeon.org/w/help/1332/forum-discussion-topics

b) a points/incentive system in place to reward the best contributors.

c) a short video presentation from me about it all.

This is all being delayed somewhat by events here at VetSurgeon Towers. My daughter had to go into intensive care at the end of last week, on a ventilator, and the consultant was giving us the 'prepared for the pearly gates' talk. That was hard. Anyway, she's made progress. Seizures have abated and they are making progress with the pneumonia. Hoping they might wake her later today or tomorrow. And in the meantime, just to add to the fun and merriment round here at the moment, I'm having an allopurinol-induced attack of gout. What a laugh, eh?

Anyway, my point is that progress is delayed, but my enthusiasm for the clinical discussion promotion is undiminished. I just don't think I'm feeling up to c) above quite yet. But I am working on b).

On which note, what do YOU think would be a good incentive for vets who win the most points for their contribution to clinical discussions?

My budget depends on how many rewards I offer, and I am always torn between offering lots of people something small, or one person something huge.

I think I lean towards the former, and there may be no need to be particularly clever. For example, who DOESN'T want an amazon voucher? If that, what is the minimum voucher that's worth having, do you think? £25? £50? £100?

I suppose the only argument for something other than an amazon voucher would be if I could source prizes for a lower cost than their face value. Is there anything along those lines that you think would be worth having? Stethoscopes a bit dull, I'd have thought. Any thoughts?

Thanks bob lehner - you're right, it is! Went into ICU last night because she had a bit of pneumonia and they didn't want to be doing it in a crisis in the middle of the night. Seizures controlled now (as they always are when she's anaesthetised!). Waiting for news as to when they're going to wake her.

Did you press the edit button on the right hand side? Hang on a mo .... I'll move it to the middle so it is more obvious.

Thanks Joyce and Derek. It really is a right bugger. I don't want to go off topic here, but with a disease like this, I really don't know whether to pray that she lives or dies. It is truly brutal.

Just to say thank you all again so much for the thought you're putting into this. I'm going on and off air a bit at the moment, because daughter in hospital again and we're not getting on top of her seizures. It's a real bugger, and very draining. But I'm back for a few hours now and this is a very helpful distraction :)
