Yes, but video is SO much more compelling. And it doesn't have to be anything clever. Just get someone to hold the camera at eye height, reasonably close up, and say one sentence into the lens whilst wearing a smile! Shall I do a demo with a mobile phone?

Do you mean not quite funky enough for the younger crowd, and perhaps I should present it from a table at the local nightclub? (I'm joking, but underlying point is serious). And what makes my delivery in front of a radiator (not a fireplace BTW!) especially unsuitable at a time of uncertainty?

This I LOVE. I don't think it needs to be part of this video. Being part of a second one would be a second bite of the cherry, which would be good.

The two big problems are getting people to do it, and getting them to do it well enough.

Perhaps if I asked everyone to make a one sentence video on their mobile phone and email it to me. Get someone to hold phone for you, look into camera and say one sentence: 'I like/love VetSurgeon because ...'

ie keep it really quick. Small file size, so emailable, and I can do a mash up of lots of them.

Prize of 6 bottles of bubbly for the best, so the winner can have a bottle for themselves and 5 friends/family at Christmas this year

I am preparing a small area at home that is not cluttered, is well decorated and ordered. A metre to either side is chaos of course.

All in readiness for a digital Christmas (awful prospect).

VS already has a 'captive' and committed bunch of members that love the simplicity and value of this platform and, perhaps more importantly, would hate to see it swallowed up and vanished down the social media sewer. So, perhaps consider...

Well, a large chunk of the target audience visits this site, just not necessarily the parts I want them to visit (or as often). So starting point is an interstitial ad on this site (one that covers the screen and when you arrive). I can minimise the impact on regulars by setting it to appear just once per month, for example.

Also an email campaign.

And then in conjunction with an incentive.

Also, an ask that existing members share it.

I quite like your gestures and facial expressions. They show enthusiasm and imply sincerity. You want to look human, not like an overpaid over-rehearsed fake-smile "presenter".

I did think at one point your voice was about to give out.

Anyone else got any thoughts about the video? One person said I move too much and it is distracting, and that I need to have examples of the sorts of questions people can ask - anyone agree? Should I reshoot again? Or is it good enough? I'm not sure if I have the health and strength to do it yet again, but if needs must.

Yes, you're right, VS is great for non clinical and support, but I don't really have any advantage over Facebook for that. For clinical, by contrast, I've got a list of reasons as long as my arm why VS is superior. So ... strategically I think best to shout about the benefits of clinical discussions on VS, then when people come here and have a great experience with helpful, considered, qualified replies, then they will start to think about using VS for other discussions too.

That is my master plan, anyway!

You are doing VS down a bit by saying Facebook is 'good' for non-clinical and support. VS is actually really good should a crisis happen. People will jump in with good advice and a holding hand!!

OK - here is my final offer!! I rewrote this, and Bob Russell I hope this works for you! I have tried to lead much more on the positives about VetSurgeon, and be more even handed about Facebook, whilst still pointing out its weaknesses. I hope the end result is perhaps more credible and less likely to be dismissed as the rant of someone with a vested interest, but maybe I am deluding myself there. Anthony Dennison - removed the 'vets barely scraped through comment' and expressed it another way.

Anyway, everyone, whaddyathink? Do you think it works? If you do, I have a plan for how I can get it in front of all members of VetSurgeon effectively!

Echo most of the points re: video. Some of the best vets I know 'barely scraped through'. Otherwise get's the point across well.

I am anti-negativity and an absolute loather of FB because I think it is dangerous. Being positive is attractive, a little swipe at the opposition is fine. I don't think there is anything major wrong with the video however I am really uncomfortable with the 'scraped through' bit. There are high achievers that I would not allow near my pets and 'sloggers' that I hold in admiration! I am pleased with this rethink!

At the end of the day this is just an ad.

Yes can make it much bigger and put elsewhere on the site, but want to make sure the message was good first. A couple of people have highlighted the 'just scraped through vet school remark' and thought it would alienate some.

Its really interesting, what feedback I have had so far has been pretty evenly split between those who think I am being too critical of facebook / ranty / self-serving and will alienate all those people who use FB (there are many thousands in the profession who do), and those who think my film is fine/OK/good.

My suspicion is that the people who are less favourable are FB regulars, and don't especially like the negativity about it (and I have to admit, there is no doubt that FB does a lot of good, as well as bad!)

Thing is, without market research, there isn't a right answer. But I think my gut says refilm with something that talks much more about the positives of VS, and balances it with glowing praise of FB as a social tool for those who want to share photos of their holidays (which is what I guess you would call damning with faint praise!)

I'll have another shot at it this week. Hoping this week will get better. Daughter back in hospital at the moment with respiratory problems. Improving, but it's all a bit up and down. And just to get my week off to a really good start, I knocked a really expensive filming monitor off my desk this morning, so that's had to go back to Germany to be repaired, less than two days after it arrived. Never rains.
