Microchipping seems a poor deterrent (often they are cut out) it makes me wonder if returning to a physical tattoo would be useful. Perhaps inguinally or somewhere visible but inconspicuous.
Does anyone have any experience

RE: Tattooing dogs
Where from?
Black market and not from vets. Ketamine is a widely used drug and pretty much everything can be sourced through networks that extend all the way to asian drug producers. Anaesthetics, steroids, ephedrine, etc. If people can smuggle heroin from Afganistan they'll smuggle anything.

RE: Tattooing dogs
They can buy anaesthetics and all sorts of drugs, see the example of the breeders found cropping ears at home, they had ketamine, xylazine, antibiotics, etc.
Where from? I know there are veterinary practices that still hand out antibiotics, oxytocin etc to breeders, but where would they get a controlled drug like ketamine? that said, when I did a volunteer stint in Greece in 2001, the charity I was working for could buy Ketamine in high street chemists quite easily.
The truth is that as long as cars get stolen, houses get broken into, people are mugged, dog smuggling will not stop either.
Of course, if the criminals can still ply their trade and rake in £1000's they will. Add to that gullible and stupid people happy to pay £1000's on the likes of Gumtree or pets4homes for a puppy they haven't even seen, which they see as a commodity or fashion accessory, that has not been checked or vetted in any way, and a transaction and exchange in a layby or carpark. Then in addition there is no effective regulation, legislation, enforcement or punishment to prevent it. No surprise really.

How do criminals remove the chips or especially the tattoos? They have to precisely locate the chip then dig it out, presumably without an anaesthetic bing given? So as for removing a tattooed ear that is even worse. Who is brave enough to slice off a dog's pinna without anaesthesia. Apart from the obvious welfare/cruelty aspect, is it not obvious when a dog only has one ear-flap?! Once identified, maybe the angle is to deal with this from the cruelty aspect? I expect the legal difficulty is finding the individual responsible and having witness accounts of the procedure?

I still think that the scruff s the best place for a chip as it is our usual place to inject plus the tissue depth is great there so a chip should be harder to relocate for removal? I guess that the ciminals must have a scanner to help find them in dogs. With cats you can often feel them but rarely in dogs IME.

Any comments on this please? TIA.

RE: Tattooing dogs

I guess if someone is brazen enough to cut out a microchip, they would also cut out (inguinal skin) or cut off (ear pinna) a tattoo. If the criminals are determined enough, have a market to sell them (idiots ready to pay £1000's and not buying from a credible source), little or no chance of being caught (Lack of enforcement, police not interested, no political will to do it) , then sweet FA in terms of punishment if they are caught - it ain't gonna stop any time soon.

Maybe the way forward in terms of identification would be a DNA database.

I can see from the links posted previously, that our brethren from the travelling community are involved.

I was involved in a stolen dog case about 2 years ago. I sensed something was not right within a consultation, and identified the dog and discovered it was reported stolen from its microchip. The police became involved and the dog was reunited with its rightful owner, but a criminal case was not pursed at all.

RE: Tattooing dogs

If not inside the ear then it tends to be inguinal.
Really? I've never come across that. it must be very difficult for the criminal fraternity to remove microchips?

Maybe placing microchips in harder to remove locations, or additional chips could help?
