That's why I am being a bit quiet at the mo, but behind the scenes the developers are working on a couple more things and I hope I'll be back at full speed next week - because I really want to crack on with rolling out more expert forums. Next big thing is being able to tangent expert questions into general discussions. We're pressing all sorts of buttons behind the scenes, we think we've identified where the bottleneck is, but we are still unsure what is causing it. Sitting here using the site on a new computer with 15mbps connection, I am finding the site is usually VERY fast, but the odd page hangs whilst loading (though none this morning), up to nine seconds or so, which is just too long. A normal, fast load takes sub 3 seconds with content appearing way faster than that (so the last second or two is loading background functionality you don't see).

So far we've changed the antivirus setup, switched off the backup system, and paused a service we use to speed the site up (in case it was having the reverse effect).

I am no sure I can tell any difference this morning! (But for me, speed is not causing much of an issue. Just the occasional slow page).

RE: Site Speed

[quote userid="2100" url="~/001/nonclinical/f/site-support-discussions/29152/site-speed/223766"]I don't think we have a spell checker.
Yeah, but it isn't very time you click on a new page, right? It's occasional pages. As I say, mine is blisteringly fast most of the time, and then slows for the odd page.
12 years old ... that is very long in the tooth, and it really does explain why it just doesn't have enough oomph to keep up. I tend to replace my computer every 5 years or so.

It is a different issue to the one the others are reporting. Looking at the timing of events, it looks like it may have coincided with the deployment of the new vetnurse website on the same server (which is running fine). Maybe it was just too much having them both on the same box. Anyway, we are looking into that and may add another server into the mix shortly.

Bear with us. We will get there!

RE: Site Speed

My laptop was purchased around 2008 I think. It's importnat to note that I have no intention of updating my hardware in the next few years, don't own a smart phone and am probably not your target market.

The issue the video is trying to highlight is the order of page loading specifically the blue discussion box which as it increases in size, decreases in size and increases in size prior to pushing the first forum thread off the screen entirely, it is hard to hit the continue reading button on the thread of interest until fully loaded. The same problem is not experienced on, for instance, a forum thread once clicked on.

If it loads faster, then the problem is worse for me. At the speed in that video I could easily have clicked continue reading with accuracy, before the blue box loaded, in a efficicent manner - if you speed the video up to x2 and then rewatch it would show you what happens with someone on a more modern computer that is not intentionallly having slow reaction times.

Honestly doesn't bother me, but I suspct this is the issue that is being referred to by others.

Hotmail does the same now and if I didn't wait for it to fully load I risk clicking on the wrong email.

It undoubtedly makes sense to load the discussion threads first so one can click on them first before other stuff loads, however the other stuff being above them means they start to become a moving target until page is fully loaded (and a moving target that actually disappears off the bottom of the screen once fully loaded, leading to an increased desire in the name of click efficiency to hit continue readin gon the thread of interest before one has to scroll down to find it.
