I need to locum for 4-6 weeks as I am changing jobs and have a gap inbetween to fill. I am utterly confused with the whole IR35 thing as to whether I should set up as a sole trader and contact practices

RE: Short Term Locum

That’s very helpful thank you

RE: Short Term Locum

Might be easier to ask to go PAYE if you're only doing 6 weeks. A lot of the corporates will be happier with that anyway, even for only a few days. Some will just use a zero hours contract. Probably 'cheaper' than an umbrella company.

I wouldn't bother setting up a Ltd company etc. And although you can be self employed/sole trader with some practices, it probably isn't worth the hassle of doing tax returns etc.

I get lots of work .... more than I want, simply by emailing my details to local practices. You can find a list of practices on the RCVS website. You just have to decide what distance you're happy to travel to. Fortunately I'm in a densely populated area with a LOT of practices within 20 miles.

Charges depend on what you think you're worth and your area. I think the average for an experienced vet who is happy to be sole charge is probably about £300 for a 10 hour day (plus lunch break).
