We are revamping our OOH rota and were just wondering what works for everyone. There have been suggestions of 7 nights on the trot or 3 on 4 off. Then also are split shifts better or 12 hours straight. The problem comes in that each person

RE: Out of hours rotas

Thank you for the reply

RE: Out of hours rotas

Thank you for the reply

RE: Out of hours rotas

Thank you for the reply

RE: Out of hours rotas

Thank you for the reply

RE: Out of hours rotas

Thank you for the reply

RE: Out of hours rotas

Not worked it myself (locum for a few OOH services) but if I were to go permanent the one that sticks out was a rota that separated during the week with weekends.

Think it was weekend days, onto weeknights (so had Monday daytime to rest), then week off, then weekend nights. Then during the week off and repeat.

RE: Out of hours rotas

I have worked a few years for dedicated ooh service with various shift pattern. did over 2 years in 1 week on 1 week off first 14 then reduced to 13 hours night shift. I loved the type of work but had to stop as 1 week off sounds great but the shifts became so busy that a needed about 2,3 days to feel halfway human again so basically waisted my days off to recover. still miss emergency work but would never do a rota like that again. 4 days in a row would be my maximum

RE: Out of hours rotas

Hello, I'd fully agree with 1) of Neil.

I personally prefer a week or so in a row and after the experience I have made with 1wk on/ 2wk off I would not take on a 1wk on/ 1wk off position. I find it takes 2 days to get somewhat back to normal, as Neil wrote, and another 3-5 to get my sleeping patterns back to completely normal. That means, for me, with a 1wk on/ 1wk off rota I would get thrown out of normal trot just after having arrived there and I don't think doing that would be sustainable long term for me.

RE: Out of hours rotas

My experience is from Vets Now and talking to other vets

1) For longevity, 1 week on , 2 off is the one that keeps staff. I don't think that's unreasonable given the shift length and the fact that chopping and changing day ad night takes its toll.

2) 1 week on, one week off is another popular one, but I look on it as 2 days recovering, 1 day dreading starting again

3) Vets Now did have a system of annualised hours where basically all the staff could choose what they wanted to do provided they fulfilled their obligation which i think was equivalent to 3 nights per week. In a staff vote 96% wanted this and it improved retention, however tough to manage as some days were unpopular. Personally i liked it, but was contracted 29 nights/year.

4) 4 nights in my opinion is the maximum if you don't want to go nocturnal

 Hope that helps

Sure, you got 7 days off in a row, which sounds fab, but the last day or two you were apparently really exhausted, and you spent two of your 7 days off sleeping or switching your life to daytime mode. Jet lag, if you will.

RE: Out of hours rotas

Yes, the night staff are separate from the day staff.
