Anyway, could you all do me a small favour, and navigate round a few of the sections.

I hope this stays. If someone prefers to post with a pseudonym, well, why not? It was good enough for James Herriot. If the advice is good, I don't care if the display name is Professor Jones, or Skippy the Dancing Boa Constrictor. Verification of veterinary status is important, yes, but once that is done I don't really care what you call yourself.

RE: Please could you test a few things on VetSurgeon for me!
The thank you button didn't work, but thank you!
Yes, I am trying to fix that right now. It works OK in chrome, and we fixed it on our test server, but now we've deployed the fix to the live server, it is not working.

RE: Please could you test a few things on VetSurgeon for me!

The thank you button didn't work, but thank you!

RE: Please could you test a few things on VetSurgeon for me!
Hi Arlo, have you thought about having non clinical as an 'interest'?
Yes, I have. And yes, I agree with you. BUT ... our biggest competition is Facebook. Facebook's biggest strength is the fact that many people are there using it for family stuff anyway.

It's biggest weakness is the total lack of transparency over people's professional qualifications - ie poor provenance for the info and experience shared.

VetSurgeon, with the new profiles and certain professional info displayed by posts (not to mention better curation and a host of other things), is inarguably a better format for clinical discussion. But this professional transparency is less important for non-clinical subjects, so I think I have a less compelling argument for people discussing non-clinical matters here.

My hope is that we will have some more interesting non clinical discussions in the future, but at the moment I think I need to lead on our strength over Facebook, which is a professional format, rather than one that was designed to share holiday snaps.

RE: Please could you test a few things on VetSurgeon for me!

Hi Arlo, have you thought about having non clinical as an 'interest'? The ones discussing business and mental health are often the ones with the most lively debate, as we can all relate to them, and share experiences which keeps people hooked to returning to the site. In clinical practice, one doesn't have difficult cases every day of the week, and if it is very easy to search for a stock answer, there is less reason to engage.

RE: Please could you test a few things on VetSurgeon for me!

Another thing about anonymity is that I think it perpetuates a kind of unhealthy view of the profession: that you can't share any information for fear of being judged critically, either by the authorities or by one's peers.

Of course there are going to be times when something is so sensitive, it MUST be discussed anonymously. But to take that as the default position is, in my opinion, to say something quite negative about the profession you work in.

I know it is still a bit idealistic, but the direction of travel is surely towards greater transparency, and a profession where people are not fearful of sharing their mistakes (for example), because other people's mistakes are probably the thing that everyone learns most from!

RE: Please could you test a few things on VetSurgeon for me!

As one can post as Anon, or via Arlo, there should be no reason to need anonymity.

RE: Please could you test a few things on VetSurgeon for me!

Yes, there is, but I STRONGLY urge you to reconsider.

Various reasons. Primarily though because I think anonymous posting is simply not appropriate for the sharing of scientific information, experience, ideas etc., where the provenance of the information you share is important. I dislike the way that opinions are given equivalence on Facebook, when all opinions are most certainly not equal.

If VetSurgeon.org is to survive, and that is not something I take for granted, then it is important it offers something distinctly different to Facebook groups. If not, you won't have to worry about anonymity - the only choice will be Facebook groups where you have to show your name!

That point of difference, from now on, means the highest quality of clinical discussions where the provenance and context of posts is transparent.

For the moment, my rules on transparency are that any expert contributing to our new Expert forums needs to make full disclosure. It is in their interests anyway!

For the moment, yes, you can elect to display your username instead of your real name, in account settings. That obscures both your real name and the practice you work for. You can remove your university details on your profile page.

If you do that, I notice you have removed your real name from your registration details. You will need to reinstate that, or I will delete your account (I allow people to display usernames for the moment, but I do not allow accounts without real names registered).

Again, I urge you not to. There is the anonymous login for those times when members want to seek advice anonymously for sensitive issues. For normal discussion, we should all be as transparent as possible. When discussing sensitive issues, you should really be using the anon account because then even I don't know who you are! https://www.vetsurgeon.org/w/help/1235/anonymous-posts

RE: Please could you test a few things on VetSurgeon for me!

Arlo, is there a way to take off your University and job details from your profile?
