Slight correction of above - under Sch4 of IRR17 you are required to consult your RPA if you introduce a new source of ionising radiation.
Is replacing one generator with another "introducing a new source"?

If it is, yeah OK. You should write and tell your RPA . Who will doubtless write back with a few obvious comments, thus justifying his fee.

RE: Nomad hand held X-ray units

Slight correction of above - under Sch4 of IRR17 you are required to consult your RPA if you introduce a new source of ionising radiation.

RE: Nomad hand held X-ray units

You don't have to speak to your RPA, just rewrite your standing rules slightly. Of course you can ask your RPA for suggestions, if you feel like giving him some work to justify his fee.
if you're learning its harder to go through the process of take the wrong picture, make the adjustment to angle and reshoot and see how you get the right picture
Quite agree.

The thing about a handheld unit is that it is, er, handheld. You need somewhere to put it down when not taking an exposure, and dental operatories are invariably very short of horizontal surfaces. I have a nurse hovering to take it from me, and we put it on a wall rack (optional extra) when not in use. When finished with for the day, we put it away in a case (which is not supplied with it).

With the longer exposures you can get camera shake. The thing is quite heavy. You'd need to be Rambo to use it onehanded as the advertising pictures suggest.

On the other hand (), it's handy (). You aren't tied to the radius of a mounting arm.

There is a problem with the Nomad batteries which the suppliers don't seem to have an answer for. Irritating but not prohibitive.

I needed a replacement in a hurry when my Philips Oralix ceased to work (ironically, because of a failure in the modern control unit). A Nomad was the only unit I could get without waiting. I do like its advantages, despite the disadvantages, but if I had leisure to think and decide I'd be looking at the other handheld one available (looks rather like a big digital camera).

RE: Nomad hand held X-ray units
Looking at replacing our dental X-ray machine which is no longer mobile, ( the joints have rusted solid ), and wondered if anyone here has any experience with the hand held X-ray units please?
If you are going handheld you will be changing your way of working (assuming you don't already hold the xray tube) so will need to speak to your RPA. For instance our SOP is that we are outside of the room when taking the xray, but many say you are >2m away etc.
Given how easily clippers and other kit get dropped; I'd worry about the risks of damage compared to a self-supporting unit. If you're great at getting the picture the first time they can speed the acquisition; if you're learning its harder to go through the process of take the wrong picture, make the adjustment to angle and reshoot and see how you get the right picture

RE: Nomad hand held X-ray units

I've not tried the hand-held models, but I think it must be more difficult getting the angles right.
I bought the IM3 Revolution 4DC recently and can highly recommend it - lovely to work with though it does take a little getting used to.
