Test your knowledge of pointless veterinary trivia, some of which has featured on VetSurgeon for the eagle-eyed ;-)
Q1: In a normovolemic cow with a PCV of 10%, a blood

RE: Veterinary MCQ's trivia quiz

According to my Miller, the radial carpal bone represents the fused radial, central and intermediate carpal bones of lower vertebrates. So if the name really has to be changed for Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria, it ought to be the intermediocentroradiocarpal bone.

Frankly, I can't see why the name has to be changed at all, but what do I know?

RE: Veterinary MCQ's trivia quiz

Q1 I think could have been clearer. I guess the answer can be agreed to be NOT (a) ;-)

To get answer (d): you can do:

Let y = the blood volume required from donor cow

Blood volume of each cow = 0.08*600 = 48L

0.1*48 + (0.35*y) = 0.14 (48+y) [assumes that the recipient cows blood volume increases with the infusion by the amount infused]

and solve for y

To get answer (b):

0.1*48 + (0.35*y) = 0.14*48 [asssumes the recipient cow's blood volume remains constant at 48L after the infusion]

and solve for y

(c) could perhaps be justified also if you felt that neither scenario was realistic and thus the answer must be somewhere in-between.

Q2 = (c) [at least in Miller's Anatomy of the dog, 3rd edition - the intermediate and radial carpal bones have evolved to be a single bone in the dog c.f. some other species]. I can't say if it has always been called this in anatomical texts or if it changed name at some point, but looking online this term has been in use since at least 2010 http://geb.uni-giessen.de/geb/volltexte/2010/7619/pdf/SadanMadeh_2010_04_27.pdf ]

Q3 = (b) is correct. (a) and (c) are diagnostic maneuvers. (d) is also a suggested therapeutic maneuver with some letters changed in the middle word. [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25103883 ]

Q4 = (d) famously only identified when patients in intensive care were dying disproportionately when receiving etomidate continuous effusions as I understand it [I've never corroborated if this is true or not]. more recently this side effect has been trialled as an experimental treatment for hypercortisolemia (e.g. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30560224 )

Q5: cats. Or at least I've only ever seen it in cats. Bonus point for naming the most oft suggested therapy (other than surgical excision or benign neglect); extra bonus marks for any clever clogs knowing why it can be embarassing collecting this from a pharmacy on prescription or how practically one may apply the pharmaceutical preparation available in the UK.

I found a paper in humans showing that the PCV 15 minutes post-transfusion is very similar to that after 24 hours, i.e. normovolaemia is restored rapidly.

Of course now I'm about to log in to the PDR to record the CPD

RE: Veterinary MCQ's trivia quiz

Only one I know is q5 and the answer is b (at least I think it is and will be highly embarrassed if I’m wrong )

RE: Veterinary MCQ's trivia quiz

Edward would be right with the answer of d if you were mixing the two volumes of blood in a vat. Or, I suppose, if the recipient cow were currently hypovolaemic and the extra blood volume took it to normovolaemia. However, it states that the cow is currently normovolaemic, so it would get rid of the excess volume and Evelyn is right with b. No idea about the other questions!

RE: Veterinary MCQ's trivia quiz

1. d)
