I doubt his moral stance is any more good or bad than anyone else's.

He has realised he is not going to get support to be PM so is planning to follow his political career in a different direction.

I think Boris is being quite canny. He is keeping everyone guessing.

Anyone play poker? Anyone who has been through a divorce will probably faced similar tactics from the ex's solicitors.

The fact that we are guessing and all sorts of dirty tricks and scare tactics are being thrown at him and the Brexit brigade suggests he is more on the ball than Ms May ever was!

It was a joke. My mum does a rather funny impersonation of Rory Stewart using her fingers (opposing each other, and as if playing the piano) as his teeth.

Joking aside, I am certainly not dismissive of Rory Stewart. He's not my cup of tea. Too earnest for me. And I don't agree with a lot of what he says.

That's interesting. Is it his tactics, or is it just the situation he is in?

In other words the majority voted to leave. He is in charge of delivering that. The judges/civil service/parliament and doom sayers are trying to frustrate his efforts. Those are not Boris' tactics. Boris didn't pit the electorate against the liberal elite. They found themselves on opposite sides of the fence well before Boris arrived on the scene.

RE: Do you trust Boris as your new PM?

The whole Brexit thing is a mess and it almost doesn't matter now how and when it will happen.
Boris is Johnson's public clown persona to make him at one with the masses

You lefty clowns really are humourless. God, the lives you lead. Your posts have been nothing but a personal diatribe against a man, personally, and mostly without any substance other than rumour. Politicised. Biased. And downright offensive. The worst if it? You and others are trying to paint him as someone who should be held to a higher moral standard whilst you yourself are throwing tittle tattle mud at him.

As Arlo has said, I'm no Boris groupie. I reserve judgement.

Vetbl.locum have you made mistakes or lied? If so, would you expect to be hounded out of your locum job or livelihood? Or are you expected to live a less moral life than you expect of others?!

The left. Infantile.
David

You are talking nonsensical baised uniformed sh&&e

I am not at all left wing and hold Corbyn as much to blame as Johnson for the sad state of the UK

Why do you have to resort to personal insults?

Since when are socialists banned from being vets ?

I asked Arlo the question as I was unsure if it was banter regarding RS

Why call me a leftie clown ? Can I call you Tory t### ? Your response is symptomatic of the problem in the UK at present

The thread is trust in Boris as PM and I was out lining why I don't trust him

BJ painted himself Arlo wants to give him to benefit of doubt and I have formed my opinion which is different.

Why is it offensive ? That I dislike BJ ? That I think Brexit especially no deal is a bad thing ?

I have asked previously as to the benefits to me of brexit and when can I expect to see them? So please can you answer me that ?

Yes if I lied about a professional matter I expect the RCVS may take the step to stop me working as a vet When I have made mistakes the VDS have paid out.I

Inprevious career if I was shagging my colleagues then there would have censure applied

So yes I expect people who wish to gain high office to behave to a higher standard

If left is infantile does that make the right the Grown ups? That seems a simplified world view ! But if it makes you happy

Why not give examples of how BJ will sort out UK ? No you seem to prefer to be rude and name call.Again this is part of problem in UK at present

We are right you lot rubbish That leaves No room for comprise or debate. Highly tribal and potentially dangerous.

So please play ball not the person

Is you wish start a thread about Corbyn as PM or who should be leader of national unity than I can heap vitriol on Corbyn

I doubt many of us are saints as seems to be the requirement according to some!

I cannot claim to be whiter than white. I have misbehaved, lied a bit and under the intense scrutiny the PM gets, I suspect some of my past would come back to haunt me.

I wish I could take on the angels halo but I cannot. In reality when I have strayed from the straight and narrow it has probably been me that has paid the biggest price!!

You do not get to be PM by being a fool. I doubt you can get be a politician without being economical with the truth and in personal matters lies are not that unusual.

Nope. That's not what I think.

I don't really know how Boris will end up being judged. Perhaps he will be proven to be a mendacious, self-centred charlatan. All I am arguing is that I am in no position to be that judgemental based on the evidence thus far (most of which has a highly dubious provenance).

I'm also not sure where you get the idea that I think all is forgiven if we get Brexit. I'm a bit of a fence-sitter on the whole thing. I lean towards Brexit, but I am not fanatical about it. The one thing I do believe, with a passion, is that we need a resolution. And I am confident that Boris, whatever you think of him, is leading us to one.

I'll leave this here. At least Benny has his thumb tucked in, but then Johnson can't keep anything tucked in...

Comment from the Guardian:

''For the Conservative party’s Manchester conference, the slogan was “Get Brexit done”. Yet again, Boris Johnson swears blind he’s going to withdraw on schedule.
That is one huge assumption. Honestly, I do not understand how you can presume to know his motives. Personally, I think anyone who aims for high office wants a legacy. And a legacy is what is good for the UK. Who wants to be the prime minister that flushed the UK down the loo?
Fair enough

We will have to agree that I think he is mendacious self centered charlatan and you think he is Alexander the great for Brexit delivery !

You kinda answer my earlier question that all is forgivable just to have Brexit

One point though BJ did stated he was going to be King therefore his motivation is evident

Rgds

PS Just seen this:https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/oct/04/rory-stewart-resigns-from-conservative-party

I would suggest that Stewart has conviction and moral compass

Liking someone isn't the only criteria for employing them!
Quote from Article : (BJ) He was such an effective correspondent for us in Brussels that he greatly influenced British opinion on this country’s relations with Europe.

Yes but he made up lots of these reports ie lied!
I think one of the problems is that Boris is a writer and one who uses colourful descriptive language to get his point across. I relate to Boris on that score ... I've made a career out of the same thing (except in my case, it was used for PR and marketing). The problem is that people take him too literally. Whaaaaaat? You mean he hasn't thrown himself in front of the bulldozers? You mean 350 million wasn't net, but gross? (I always thought that was so obvious, I couldn't believe everyone got their knickers so twisted).

So then he gets accused of being a liar. I don't understand that. It seems so obvious to me that he is making a point, not a commandment.
Conrad did he not get locked up in jail?
Yes he did!
My main problem with BJ is that he will say any to get what is good for BJ and not the UK
That is one huge assumption. Honestly, I do not understand how you can presume to know his motives. Personally, I think anyone who aims for high office wants a legacy. And a legacy is what is good for the UK. Who wants to be the prime minister that flushed the UK down the loo?
He told Cameroon he wasn't really a leaver but it be good for his career
No he did not. That was what Cameron believed. Big difference.
He has no conviction or moral compass
How on earth do you know that?
BJ's attitude to women and the truth is questionable but if he is/was great leader then that could be overlooked? Surely Arlo you cannot be suggesting that ?
Everything in life is questionable. Mother Theresa is 'questionable'. That doesn't mean anything. But that's not what you are saying, of course. When you say Boris' attitude to women and the truth is questionable, you mean that you have found him guilty. I haven't!
Even his own siblings have doubts about his character?
Oh come on. Talk to my brother at different stages of my life, and I am sure he would have had doubts about my character. And I know I have had doubts about his! So what? Families disagree.

RE: Do you trust Boris as your new PM?
You've missed my point, which is not like you, possibly because we have about six different discussions going on simultaneously now. This was nothing to do with Prime Ministers. Just this: sure you can admire Brand (either R or J! ) or Norton or even Keith Lemon if that's what you really want to do. But if you do, don't come over all Puritan about Benny Hill or the Carry On films.
Appreciate the compliment - and very much likewise, I may not have expressed my original comment (Benny Hill as prime minister) adequately.

I'm not trying to dictate comedic taste, my objection wasn't specifically his comedic style. My objection was having an individual whose life appears to be imitating art in a position of power.

To wit: I wouldn't care to have a Benny Hill (or Russel Brand, or Graham Norton, or Leigh Francis/Keith Lemon, Bill Murray, John Candy, Richard Pryor, Rowan Atkinson, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Schumer, Chris Rock, Steven Colbert, Bill Engvall, Roseanne Barr, Jeff Foxworthy, Mel Brooks, Madeleine Kahn, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, or Kermit the Frog) as Prime Minister. (I've attempted to cover left wing, right wing, male, female, race, and religion or lack thereof.)

...well, maybe Kermit the Frog.

I like a little more stability in a nation's leadership.

RE: Do you trust Boris as your new PM?

Arlo
Johnson sacked by Max Hastings for lying
I wouldn't trust Max Hastings any further than I could throw him. He's always had it in for Boris Johnson. Here's what a man who employed both of them had to say: https://www.spectator.co.uk/2019/06/max-hastings-vs-boris-johnson-i-know-who-id-trust-more/ (and I appreciate Conrad Black is no angel!)
I know nothing of Max Hastings except he was editor of Telegraph and writes history books

Read article : Why if Conrad disliked Max but increased his pay and kept him for 9 years ?

Quote from Article : (BJ) He was such an effective correspondent for us in Brussels that he greatly influenced British opinion on this country’s relations with Europe.

Yes but he made up lots of these reports ie lied!

Conrad did he not get locked up in jail? However the Telegraph has gone down hill since.

My main problem with BJ is that he will say any to get what is good for BJ and not the UK

He told Cameroon he wasn't really a leaver but it be good for his career

He looked terrified the day 'He' had won referendum ie he expected to lose and hoped to play gallant loser card

He has no conviction or moral compass

So Arlo are you suggesting : BJ's attitude to women and the truth is questionable but if he is/was great leader then that could be overlooked? Surely Arlo you cannot be suggesting that ?

Even his own siblings have doubts about his character?
Sigh.

That's one way to duck out I guess.
Very good, if you want Benny Hill as your Prime Minister or your veterinary surgeon.
Wouldn't mind Lord Palmerston. Or Saint John F. Kennedy who really couldn't keep it in his trousers.

As against that..... George Brown who was the nearest approach to Benny Hill ever to become Foreign Secretary.

Funny, ain't it. We are supposed to shudder at Benny Hill nowadays, but it's quite acceptable, trendy even, to admire much nastier people like Russell Brand or that dirty twerp Graham Norton. Sniggering is still OK, then, as long as you are sniggering at the correct shows.

Something else. About forty years ago I went several times to Batley Variety Club. As well as the quality turn, there would always be, before the pie and mushy peas break, some ghastly comedian telling dirty jokes. Not witty innuendo jokes, straightforward crude jokes, most definitely demeaning to women. Who cackled the loudest and longest in the audience? The women. Make of that what you will.
The difference, I feel, (and this is your fault, because it was your own argument in another thread that persuaded me :) ) is that attending a show by Russell Brand or Graham Norton, you are attending a theatrical or comedic performance, where you have made a choice to partake. Neither Brand nor Norton (maybe I should reverse the order, sounds like I'm stuttering) are the nation's Prime Minister.

As a ticket holder to either performer, you are perfectly welcome to either laugh or walk out, as you like.

In national politics, and I know this is hopelessly naive, I have somewhat higher expectations of behavior. And yes, I know I'm doomed to very frequent disappointment on this one!

Benny Hill played his character because it got the laughs and paid the bills. At the time. A talented slapstick performer, he wasn't the PM, was he? I imagine were he alive today, he'd probably come up with something new.

RE: Do you trust Boris as your new PM?

That is hilarious statement !
Not really.
Johnson sacked by Michel Howard for lying about his affair
I'm not sure I could condemn anyone for a white lie about having an affair. What business is it of mine or anyone else's?
Hancock the health secretary defended the lady in question stating she was trustworthy He did not extend that to Johnson
So what, exactly? It's a 'he said, she said' situation, and people take sides. Boris' ex has taken his side: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7526059/Boris-Johnson-not-groper-says-former-mistress-Petronella-Wyatt-amid-Charlotte-Edwardes-row.html. That is about as meaningful as Hancock's statement. Actually, probably more meaningful, as Hancock almost certainly has a vested interest.
Also Johnson was married at time of thigh pinch
Alleged thigh pinch. Personally, I find the thigh pinch highly implausible. Why wait 20 years? But in the unlikely case that there was a pinch, perhaps she mistook the sentiment behind it. And even if she didn't, a pinch is not exactly up there at the top of the list of high crimes and misdemeanours, is it? At worst, it is a moment of crass behaviour. Have we not all been guilty of something crass at some stage in our lives? I know I have, especially after a sharpener, or four.
Evidence mounting that Johnston had a different affair
Most great leaders have had affairs all over the place. Roosevelt, Eisenhower, MacArthur, Patton, Kennedy, Clinton, Mandela. I've not had one myself, but I wouldn't sit in judgement of anyone else who had (unless it involved someone close to me).
gave public money to that person whilst major of London
At the moment, just tittle tattle. Innocent till proven guilty.

Of course Boris has his faults. But I think the character assassination is being led largely by people who disagree with the result of the referendum.

RE: Do you trust Boris as your new PM?
If this new deal brings about the same problems as the previous one, why is it acceptable under Boris but not under TM?
Because they are politicians

The ERG and the Ulster Unionists have now agreed that this compromise which involves another border is better than the one agreed by Theresa May which is quite bizarre. Maybe they have come to realise that it is in fact now or never and not a case of cut my nose off to spite my face. There is talk that if the EU agree that the 21 fired Tories will still vote for it, so Boris gets his majority back.

For such a 'bad deal' it seems bizarre that the whole thing hangs on a minute part of the whole thing that in reality may not happen as there are so many safeguards placed to avoid a backstop anyway
