Whilst I have to disagree with that on principle being Yorkshire born and bred, but I do have to admit that the Ribble Valley north of Preston etc is absolutely gorgeous so yes it depends what they want to see? Historic buildings? Then Yorkshire for York, Bolton Abbey and the rest. For scenic rolling landscape then try the Ribble Valley. and beyond.

RE: Calling all Yorkshire folk!

Thanks again to everyone for such a phenomenal response.
Many in laws live in Leeds ... their neighbours feed the kites in their garden. Amazing spectacle.

[/quote]

I've seen this on local BBC TV as people throw scrap meat onto garage roofs etc and the Kites come down to feed. But, sorry to be a party-pooper, especially as I brought the subject up, but this is not a good thing. I had contacted both the Raptor Foundation in Cambs. and also

www.yorkshireredkites.net

Both of them state that firstly, the food thrown out is often incorrect because some post-mortems have identified young Kites showing rickets due to the dietary imbalances. Also if the kites become dependent on this food-source and it dries up for any reason, then the Kites are in trouble. It also deters the Kites from spreading to new territories I had asked about encouraging them here in our little Lincs. Wolds valley and was advised not to do so. Leave them to feed on road-kill and similar. Apparently, they do well on afterbirths left lying around from lambing etc. We have had them flying 25 metres from our living room on occasion which is nice and close. Fortunately, the gamekeepers round here seem to be enlightened and I was told that vigilance is the best way to protect them. Fabulous creatures. It pleases me no end every time I see one.

We almost drove into one as it was feeding from pheasant road-kill at the same as a buzzard, and we went round the bend to see both birds suddenly fly off when the car appeared. No apparent competition between the two species of raptors!

For scenery the Wolds or Moors are super. Brimham Rocks perhaps?

Places to visit? I would recommend York as the must-visit town. Jorvik is worthwhile and very interesting.

Depending upon their interests, Harewood House and Estate is great if you like that sort of thing. A very nice "bird-garden" as well. If they visit there in an evening they may be lucky enough to see the daily swarming of hundreds of Red Kites as they return to the estate from scavenging around North Leeds. If you explain that these are part of a hugely successful re-introduction scheme of a once- extremely rare bird of prey it would have more significance. [ 69 birds were initially introduced from Spain 1n 1999 and they have clearly thrived. But the flock flying to and from Harewood is a well-known local spectacle.
