They can if you agreed to certain T&C's before working for them!

It is rather different. I assume the plumber isn't using their tools and doing work for their clients on their behalf?

I can see that it is difficult to say a locum is truly 'self employed', especially if it is regular work.

The practice can be stung fora tax bill years after the locum has signed their agreement!

I've used Umbro. They didn't take very much at all (small fee per time-sheet) and there was no problem with them at all. Only locumed for a few weeks 5 years ago.

Hi, I've used FPS as as umbrella organiser. All went fine, no complaints. They just follow HMRC rules, just like everyone has to. They charge a fee but they are providing a service and have their own costs. You can't really complain about that. I have found them perfectly pleasant people to deal with.

Well, in this instance we had met before and he'd said not self-employed so I'm going to honour that. I've heard of an umbrella company now so I'll sort that.

They can't not pay you just because of your business structure. You invoice for professional fees, you sign a letter stating you are responsible for your own tax and NI.

Does the same company insist that say the local plumber is through an umbrella company?
