One of the biggest thorn-in-my-side clients, who owes around £150 (so not a fortune) for her horse's blood tests, but is paying it off at £10/month as she is hoodwinking us 'absolutely can't afford any more than that', posted the following on her FB page the other day:

"Such an amazing weekend away at XX [name of farm] pampering both myself and my darling horse - spa treatments and massages for both of us. I don't know about Y [horse], but I feel on top of the world now. Expensive, but we're worth it! #blessed"

My language was not fit for a veterinary professional!

Unfortunately the woman I am trying to get to pay her bill is an “OAP”.... so no job to use as leverage. Her daughter is the token “gobby family member“ who writes the abusive notes and slams the phone down on me. “How dare I try to get her elderly mother to pay her bill when she’s just lost her husband” ... well , the internet being a marvellous invention at times, ....has allowed me to see her elderly mother on holiday via her Facebook page ....and traced her husband‘s death to last September.

Watching four series of Line of Duty back to back has not been wasted CPD!

They can knock on doors too.

When I was young and energetic I used to go and knock on doors myself. Now and then it actually produced a payment.

When I was a newish vet in mixed practice in Fife, I offered to go round a few doors to collect our debts, with some success. Months later when at the ice cream van, the lady serving said, "You look familiar."
I asked, "Do you have a pet?"
When she said yes, I offered that she might have seen me as I'm a vet.
The husband appeared behind her and said, "I thought you were a debt collector!"

I did that once – managed to track the bloke down to his employment – went through the legal stuff and got an attachment of earnings order. He simply left the job.

I got a garnishee order once, and this might interest the OP. If you can find out the debtor's bank account details (from, for instance, a cheque they have written) you can get a garnishee order which compels the bank manager to hand over the money from the account. The only drawback is that the bank only has to hand over money that's in the account the day the order arrives. If there's only two quid in the account that day, two quid is all you'll get, even if Mrs. Debtor pays in two thousand the following day.

I nearly had the bailiffs seize a couple of horses once. The trouble was that they were in a field with other horses and nobody could be quite sure which ones were the debtor's.

Crikey, I'll bet your success rate is the same as one account and one County Court warning letter yet so much less effort!!??

I send 3 letters- a polite reminder, followed by a statement, with an added "account fee" (about £1.50, to cover the cost of chasing it!) then a final letter saying if you don't settle within 7d we will send you to the debt collector (which I never do- never had any success!, but might worry them will affect their credit score??) and remove you from our client list. I wait a couple of weeks then remove them from my client list (note on their file) and my life!

I find the amounts I am chasing aren't huge. Sometimes it's easier just to know they are not your problem any more. Some clients it is worth a small price to be rid of forever!

We have gone to court and awarded everything including costs but the hard core debtor (all of the ones that get to this stage) do not care. They already have outstanding CCJ's and no resources for bailiffs to seize.

I do still follow these people up but don't bother with the actual court side routinely. Occasionally I want that CCJ!!

An unpaid consultation is a cheap way of finding out that a 'client' is no good. We lock the account and thank ourselves lucky we have not lost more!

We have uncollected ashes sitting in the office at the moment and an unresponsive ex-client. This does pi+s me off because I have paid the crematorium.

It was always an easy process and the judge deciding was fair and perceptive, IMHE.

AFAIK you must send a "letter before action" or the claim is thrown out.

CC Judgments really affect the debtors financial future with all sorts of restrictions from lenders and banks.

Also proof of posting is proof of service.

Unfortunately I find the sort of clients who don’t pay their bills aren’t afraid of the debt collectors. Rarely get any money back through them.... all they can legally do is send texts and letters and make phone calls. The most power they have is TO USE AN AGGRESSIVE FONT!

I am about to make a claim online through the small claims court to try to get a client to pay .... see how that goes. I’d honestly rather not have the hassle but a) it’s a business at the end of the day and b) it’s the principle of the thing.

The letter itself never produces anything but you are obliged to send it before sending in the debt collectors.

Sometimes the debt collectors extract something. More often they don't. But I always send them in. You need a local firm that's prepared to go and knock on doors.

Firstly, how unbelievably galling. It's this sort of client interaction that makes this job the pits sometimes. Hope you get some nice flowers or similar from an appreciative client to offset this rubbish.

Secondly, do people find debt collector letters work? Do you ever follow through or is it simply not cost effective in most cases?

They are draining, scum bags.

What is good is they have given you a cheque, even if filled in incorrectly ( bank might still cash if similar...). Cheque is a legal promuse to make the funds ie cash available.

Also mske sure you have copies of consent to treat, pts , cremate etc where client signed thst aware of costs etc.

I would absolutely report to police, as you have been threatened ( and rather stupidly in writing) they have dropped themselves in deep doodoo!

We had similar but on socisl media, law has changed recently, police visited the person and followed it up, stopped him in his tracks .

Takes a bit of time but worth it, then have a stiff drink!
