An estate with a dog guard and an inner cover that is washable will sort this combined with a task for the AKAs in the afternoon.

Not me! The Skip (as my husband affectionately calls it) is mode of transport for 3 messy children, a mud orientated border collie and a corgi who sheds his own weight in hair every day! I only use it as a taxi for theses guys or to drive to 10 mins to work and back again, so definitely no need or desire for anything "nice"! I love my Nissan Micra- small enough to park anywhere, £30 a year road tax, cheap to run. Because it is small a neighbouring business lets me park in their car park for free. He came out all worried the other day because one of them had scraped it with their car- I just laughed. The tiny scratch was hardly noticeable, in among the scratches that the dogs have made jumping into the boot.

In my first ever job interview many decades ago ( with a Mr Spittle) I was offered a three wheeler , Only Fools and Horses style as practice car and perk. The cats were anaesthetised by inserting head into a jam jar of chloroform, this was unacceptable practice! (as I then smoked a lot). All in the front room of his semi detached. Coming from Cambridge this was all an eye opener.

I had seen what seemed quite poor vets seeing practice working long hours and some didn't seem all that happy, for some incomprehensible reason. Wouldn't happen to me in my imagined glittering future! I didn't take that job even for the three grand a year and alternate nights off call.

Some of us just like a nice car , there are two types of possible client perception 1, is your making too much money out of my misfortune or 2 , This vet has a really good car which means he/she earns lots and is busy and really good at what he does .( I think the smarter well healed clients you really want think like that ).

Last week at the Nuffield I was there for about 7 minutes and paid £450 for an intra-articular injection into my shoulder joint ,on the way out I saw the consultant getting into his Aston Martin, and good luck to him.

I guess long gone are the days when large animal vets worked in older cars so farmers didn't get disgruntled.

I locum at a place next to a dentist who has regular CPD events. You can always tell when there's an event as the area is stuffed with Range rovers and expensive German cars. Mind you looking in peoples mouths all day, got to be some perks

PS My father (a farmer) always judged a vet by his waterproofs. If they were tucked in he regarded them as a twit because any cow ... (friend of piglet) would go down the boots...... little things make big impressions

If its corporate there will be a Berlingo Van for general use and the vets will be driving cheap sheds, similar to the sheds that locums usually show up in.

I have a Mercedes E class All Terrain , Its leased ,the other Directors have a Landrover Disco Sport, A Mercedes GLC cross over thing , and a top of the range Skoda Octavia sporty number , god knows why but its what he wanted .They are all leased, The point is choice and rewards.

Happily locuming now ... and loving it!!! Richer, still get to be a vet but more time off...what's not to love?

What's important to one vet won't be the same as another, so hard to be general, however:

Speak to people that know the practices where possible, otherwise narrow and speed your search by discounting anything with a Google review under 4.8

Just make sure the practice owner doesn't have a designated parking place with the name on it, in largest.

Bad, so bad for client PR.

And the best way to pick vets is to work with them; a week will do [and it works vice versa too]

Not sure this is useful as could just mean been bought by corporate! I have worked places where the boss's car was a premium luxury model (that he wouldn't take to work) and another place where the boss drove a beat-up ancient thing - both had serious issues.

No. No. No. You do the clipper test - the only reliable on-site means of assessing the quality of a clinic.

Cat and dog nail clippers easily located either in, or very near to, the consult room.

Quiet, small bladed, hair clippers for cats etc that turn on and look clean.

Decent surgical clippers with properly aligned and sharp looking blades.

A named individual acting as clipper tsar who looks like they take no prisoners.

(If you wish to sort clinics remotely first, then simply phone up and request to speak to a vet...)

Boll+cks to Waitrose. We have a bright, shiney new Lidl within two hundred yards. We have a very nice Jura coffee machine that makes better coffee than Waitrose at the press of a button.

If you go for a job check out the coffee making facilities. A good indicator of the star rating of the practice!
