Many years ago , I damaged a pedigree cow :-(

Knocked £9000 off it's value.

VDS thought farmer was over inflating price ( which he wasn't) and offered to buy said beast.

When farmer said yes to sale and offered to delivered it to them ……..Panic ensured at VDS HQ as their bluff had been called.

Is anyone claiming the internet is an inappropriate place to advertise a puppy?

Legitamate breeders can and do showcase their puppies on the internet.

Sadly it is all too easy for the unscrupulous to use the internet but all too many just place an ad in the local pet store or newsagents window.

eBay has distanced itself from livestock being auctioned on its site. Good sellers would be unable to check out the purchaser.

Stupid to take a pet in lieu of a debt. Stupid to sell one to cover a debt. Stupid to buy one this way. Stupid to buy one if you do not have the means to care for it.

The debt recovery organisation presumably has a legal responsibility to make sure anything sold is fit for purpose so it is not beyond the realms of belief to see the purchaser making a claim on them for faulty goods.

Story is crazy but where would everyone think it's an appropriate place to sell a puppy if not on the internet? Better than in a shop window.

I've had people engage in a bidding war over a husky pup in an Italian restaurant. Needless to say the pup had been imported illegally, was very ill and when I reported them to the authorities was taken away. You just can't fix stupid.

That's the problem, there's too much risk of impulse buying and I can't help thinking there should be some restrictions in place.

As you say, people take pity on a pup as soon as they see them. We had one client who saw a pup on the internet, went to a house about a two hour drive away and then did 'the right thing' by asking to see the dam only to be told 'oh no, I just get the pups off a bloke in Wales' after which they bought the pup anyway as by this time they were feeling sorry for it! No idea what the answer is really?

Actually, I thought third party selling of pups was supposed to be illegal in England?

We've all been wondering, because we as vets in Germany can't take pets as pawns, not sure if the authorities can or if someone just didn't follow the rules.

Re buying pets from eBay ads (I guess that's our equivalent of craigslist), I don't see much problem with it as long as you do your research on the seller. One of my dogs I bought of eBay ads, I saw the sire and dam and talked to the people owning the dam about how the accidental breeding happened. Hence I made sure I didn't buy an illegal import or a dog from any kind of puppy mill. She had been vaccinated and dewormed and I couldn't wish for a better dog. Unfortunately most people only want to buy cheap or impulse buy and some pity gets the better of them when pups come from dubious circumstances, which helps all the illegal crap going on.

I just googled the level of annual dog tax in that town. It might be of interest to UK readers:

1 dog €78

2 dogs €108 each

3 dogs €126 each

dog from dangerous breed €624 each

In Hamburg it‘s €90 per dog, and third party insurance is obligatory.

I can’t quite understand the internet bashing. In a way we have to accept that advertising in local newspapers, which is how I found my dogs, no longer exists. It’s difficult. I have certainly dealt with regular breeders whose puppies or kittens I would not have liked to buy. From an internet ad I bought a puppy for my daughter, did all the health checks etc., family home with kids, vaccination record from vets I know, but it still was an outlet for litters that had nothing to do with the lovely bitch I saw. We couldn’t have found a greater puppy though. Buyer beware.

Pets cannot be taken by bailiffs in the UK so perhaps it could only happen in Germany!

Ebay prohibits the sale of livestock including pets on the auction sit but will allow classified adverts.

We clearly live in a very messed-up world. You'd wonder what the debt collectors had to deal with before reaching such an unpopular decision to remove a pet animal, probably knowing the reaction it would cause beforehand. On the other side of the coin, it would probably be seen as quite reasonable to remove livestock as payment for monies owed, so why not a dog? Forgetting the large emotional attachment to what most of us see as family members, where does animal welfare fit in in all of this? Selling the dog on eBay seems to be viewed as improper because the dog was seized, but should there not be outrage over all the other dogs sold over the internet on a daily basis by breeders and others wishing to profit from their sale? Yes, the whole saga defies belief, but, sadly, similar internet transactions happen every day as we write our messages here....

well at least it's very much in keeping what many pug and french bulldog owners over here are like. They buy off eBay, not from breeders (and many of the pups come from Eastern Europe with a shit ton of problems), then complain endlessly about vet costs and in the end dump them on someone else. How on earth the officials could come up with the idea to seize and sell the dog is completely beyond me though. At least this story might have brought some of the issues brachycephalic dogs have to the attention of the ever so great German public.

vetbl.locum - I used the 'tongue-in-cheek' icon () to mean that I was joking (or rather, being ironic).

OF COURSE it couldn't only happen in Germany. Germany doesn't have the monopoly on idiots!

And nor do I mean that it is a reason for leaving Europe. I was just making a silly observation based on the fact that everyone in the UK blames everything on Brexit at the moment.

But I do understand that may have been lost in translation!

I wonder if there is an equivalent to Godwin's Law for Brexit these days.

Or the other one which I think should be named Guthrie's Law, because I believe I may have been the first to note the phenomenon whereby any discussion in a facebook group set up for a village will inevitably revert to a heated debate about dog shit. Every time.

Sorry, I'm going off at a tangent, but wasn't really sure where else to take this, other than agreeing with you. Nuts!
